The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI) was informed of the accident as a serious product accident and announced it as such on September 25, 2012, in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act, which relates to an accident of unclear origin in a product other than a gas or oil appliance.
To prevent further accidents, on May 15, 2014, the company announced on its website that it will collect the products in question for a refund or replace such products.
METI would like to encourage consumers who have purchased the product subject to the recall to make use of the refund or replacement service offered by the company in order to prevent any further accidents.
1. Nature of the accident and recurrence-prevention measures
1) Nature of the accident
A serious product accident involving a coffee machine imported by Kalita Co., Ltd. occurred, causing the product to ignite and to burn its surroundings. The accident was reported to METI in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Products Safety Act (Control No. A201200450). The cause of the accident is considered to be that defective clamping of screws fixed on the terminal base overheated abnormally due to the failure of a contact on the base of the terminal, causing the product to ignite.In addition, four other accidents were reported to the National Institute of Technology and Evolution (NITE) as those not covered by Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act.No injuries have occurred as a result of the five accidents.
2) Measures to prevent recurrence
To prevent further accidents, the company will announce that it will refund or replace the products in question on its website and in newspapers on May 15, 2014.
