JOHANNESBURG (South Africa) – Hundreds of people stood in line since midnight last night to get their first taste of Starbucks coffee.

The American coffee chain store opened its first South Africa store at the Rosebank Mall in Johannesburg on Thursday. The store is the first of two that the American coffee giant is opening in the country in 2016.

Local social media platforms were flooded with images of people queueing at the coffee store.

The American company has partnered up with local food company Taste Holdings in a bid to muscle in on the South Africa’s growing urban coffee market.

Taste Holdings have signed an exclusive deal to develop the Starbucks coffee chain outlet in South Africa. It will own and operate the Starbucks stores in the country.

Taste Holdings also holds the licence agreement to develop the US pizza brand Domino’s Pizza in South Africa
