BERLIN, Germany – Lilienthal Berlin, in collaboration with the Berlin-based independent label Kaffeeform, has designed the world’s first watch made from recycled coffee. After its overwhelming success on Kickstarter last fall, the innovative Coffee Watch is now being launched in Lilienthal Berlin’s online store. The Coffee Watch has also won four prestigious design and innovation awards already: the iF Design Award, the Green Product Award, the German Design Award and the Green Good Design Award. A sustainable, one-of-a-kind watch with an award winning design.
Lilienthal Berlin launches the world‘s first watch made from recycled coffee
BERLIN, Germany — A watch made of coffee? It sounds crazy, but the two young Berlin-based companies, Lilienthal Berlin and Kaffeeform, have made it a reality. From a crazy idea has come the world’s first watch made from recycled coffee. With Kaffeeform’s expertise in materials and the right expertise in watch design from Lilienthal Berlin they have produced a truly unique, sustainable and, not only that, great smelling watch: the Coffee Watch.
Jacques Colman, one of the three founders of Lilienthal Berlin, first held a coffee mug from Kaffeeform in his hands three years ago and thought that the material was very interesting. “The Kaffeeform material felt robust and solid, so I thought, why not make a watch case out of it?” So, the founder approached Julian Lechner, the founder of Kaffeeform, with his idea. Three years and numerous prototypes later, the two founders held the final version of the Coffee Watch case in their hands. The case is made from recycled coffee grounds collected from Berlin’s cafés and sent to social workshops for further processing.
This innovative material composition is made exclusively of natural ingredients and is in no way inferior to the other watches from Lilienthal Berlin. Classically elegant Berlin design and excellent Made in Germany quality – now even more sustainable and with a subtle coffee scent on top!
Four designs: minimalist or classic
The Coffee Watch is available in four different designs and with different straps made of organic leather, vegan leather or mesh. The dial is available in black or silver, each with printed or engraved hour markers, minimalist or classic.
The rounded case made from innovative Kaffeeform material is both reminiscent of a coffee bean and a coffee cup, due to its shape, color and feel, and features a sophisticated design element.
The crown is located on the back of the Coffee Watch and stylishly complements the harmonious coffee bean look. The Coffee Watch has a case diameter of 42.5 mm and is equipped with a R756 movement from Swiss manufacturer Ronda.
Lilienthal Berlin has set the right tone with the Coffee Watch, which has won four important awards. The iF Design Award is one of the world’s most prestigious design awards. It is awarded by the International Forum Design in Germany, which has been rating the world’s most innovative products since 1953.
The focus of this award is on the combination of aesthetics, functionality, idea, form and effect. And because sustainability is not merely a trend, but the future, the Coffee Watch with its innovative recycled coffee material composition and sustainable production also received the Green Product Award.
The Coffee Watch
Since 2013, the international Green Product Award has been honoring special products that excel in sustainability, innovation and design. The Green Product Award jury was very impressed, and so was everyone else.
The Coffee Watch also made the Top 10 list of the 2022 Audience Award. The design of the Coffee Watch also convinced The Chicago Athenaeum of Architecture and Design, which honors the world’s most interesting and sustainable designs with the Green Good Design Award. The Good Design Award was founded in Chicago in 1950 by Eero Saarinen and Charles and Ray Eames and is one of the oldest and most important design awards worldwide.
And the German Design Award also honored the Coffee Watch’s innovative and outstanding design with the Special Mention design award of the German Design Council in the Excellent Product Design category. Fans of the Coffee Watch are not only contributing to a sustainable lifestyle, they also have the assurance of owning a genuine and multi- award-winning design object.
Making a statement by promoting a sustainable lifestyle
With its Coffee Watch, Lilienthal Berlin has set a new standard in the watch industry for a sustainable lifestyle. “There is a major trend towards more sustainability in many areas. In our industry, unfortunately, the clocks sometimes still run a bit slow. It is our express aim to change that,” says Jacques Colman.
The demand is there and was confirmed with the highly successful Kickstarter campaign last year. The ambitious funding target was exceeded fourfold after just a few days and the first series was able to be produced.
Now the task is to inspire even more people with this idea. There is more than enough raw material available. After all, in Germany alone, each person drinks an average of more than 164 liters of coffee a year. That’s enough to ensure that people can have a sustainable lifestyle, even when it comes to watches.
