KUALA LAMPUR – The inaugural Coffee & Art Fringe Festival Asia (CAFFA) 2013 will be held at Publika, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, this weekend on Sept 28 and 29. According to the organisers, this two-day festival for both consumers and trade fair folks will also be a platform for coffee appreciation, education with plenty of coffee sampling opportunities.

Launched together with Nescafé, the festival sees coffee tastings, latte art jamming, coffee pairing sessions as well as a mixology competition with coffee specialists. Exhibitors include Coffex Coffee, Nescafé, Espressolab, illy, Departure Lounge, Coffee Stain by Joseph, Barista Guild Asia and many more.

Coffee machines and other related brewing accessories and roasted beans will also be available for sale and demonstration.

CAFFA organising director Karen Khoo said the event, held in conjunction with International Coffee Day, is to celebrate Malaysia’s booming café lifestyle and the rising coffee appreciation trend in recent years.

CAFFA will also be presenting Battle of the Bands competition at Black Box, MAP; indie music performances, magic shows, art bazaar and drawing competition for children.

“Café lifestyle is all encompassing and we try to capture that through a festive community spirit,” added Khoo.

Levi Asher, a trainer with Barista Guild Asia (BGA) that organised the Malaysia Barista Championship with Racing Creatures in March, said CAFFA would help not only to promote coffee drinking but also educate the public on the various aspects of it.

BGA was formed in 2012 with the mission to bring coffee education and higher standards to the industry.

According to Asher, CAFFA also aims to promote coffee education and highlight the different brewing methods. “More Malaysians are starting to take interest in coffee especially after they have returned from their studies abroad.”

Open only to professional baristas, the Malaysia Barista Championship saw 26-year-old Jason Loo of Red Bean Bag cafe emerged winner with an all-expense-paid trip to attend the World Barista Championship in Melbourne last May.
