HELSINKI – Meira, one of the leading companies in Finland in the production of coffee, spices, and ketchups, announced on World Earth Day, that its emission reduction targets have been approved by Science Based Target (SBTi), the global initiative that guides companies in their path towards science-based emission reduction.

Meira joins Science Based Target

Massimo Zanetti, Chairman and CEO of Massimo Zanetti Beverage Group: “I am very proud to announce that the goals of Meira, our Finnish company, have been endorsed by Science Based Target, a leading global initiative working to combat climate change.”

“By 2028, Meira will aim to reduce all emissions deriving from its operations (scope 1 and 2) by 80%, compared to 2019 base year – a very challenging target that all management has decided to undertake by following a path based on science.”

The goal of Meira, one of the first companies in the coffee world to obtain SBTi approval for its sustainability path, is in line with the goal of limiting the global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the most challenging goal of the Paris Agreement. Meira committed to reduce all emissions deriving from its own operations by 80% by 2028 from a 2019 base year (scopes 1 and 2).

To achieve this goal, Meira has already reduced the energy needs of its operations, switched to renewable electricity, and created a roadmap for replacing natural gas with biogas and switching to renewable district heating.

The majority of Meira’s emissions are generated outside of its own operations, especially in the production and cultivation of raw materials. Therefore, the second climate objective involves indirect third-party participation.

Meira will collaborate with its suppliers to evaluate multiple approaches to reduce emissions and adopt solutions designed to lower the climate impact of its value chain.

Meira’s goal is that 90 percent of its suppliers by emissions covering purchased goods and services will have set science-based climate targets by 2025.

Meira’s target about sustainability

In addition, Meira has set a target to reduce emissions by 50 percent by 2028 from pre-production (upstream) transportation, distribution, and waste generated in its operations.

“Many companies of our Group have formally set specific objectives to pursue responsible, environmentally friendly development.”

“These objectives relate in particular to the efficient management of energy and resources, the prevention of pollution, the reduction of packaging waste, the use of by-products, the minimisation of waste, and the optimisation of transport.”

“In addition, packaging innovation will be fundamental: we have embarked on a virtuous journey towards having 100% completely recyclable product packaging.”

“With our international presence, we are aware of our potential positive influence in promoting a culture of sustainability throughout the value chain and we intend to do our utmost to reduce our environmental impact and promote sustainable development,” commented the Chairman Massimo Zanetti.

The Science Based Targets initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The SBTi defines and promotes best practice in GHG emissions reductions. Offering a range of target-setting resources and guidance, the SBTi independently assesses and approves companies’ targets in line with its strict criteria.
