Just about two weeks ago in mid-May the Coffee World Championships in three disciplines were held in Melbourne/Australia: Latte Art, Coffee in Good Spirits, Cup Tasting.
Also this year Mahlkönig was the official grinder sponsor of all World Coffee Events. The company was present on site to manage 20 grinders on stage, in practice areas and for preparation for competitors and staff for high-quality grinding.
The Senior Product Manager Christian Klatt together with Greg Clubb and David Worth of Mahlkönig’s partner and distributor Appliance Maintenance Company (AMC) from Sydney assisted all competitors to perfectly adjust the grinders in order to get the best out of their coffees.
The winner of the World Latte Art Championships is Christian Ullrich from Germany, freelance barista trainer from Nuremberg.
It was his first World Championship appearance. He poured the most creative, contrasted and consistent latte-art-patterns into his cappuccino, espresso macchiato and café latte. All participants used the official sponsor espresso machines by Dalla Corte (DC Pro) and Mahlkönig K30 Vario Air, the official espresso grinder also of the World Barista Championships.
The winner of the World Coffee in Good Spirits Championships is the local Matt Perger, head barista and roaster of St. Ali and Sensory Lab in Melbourne. He scored most points from the judges from his Irish Coffee and his signature drink „Christmas Cake“.
15 out of 17 participants competed with Mahlkönig grinders like K30 Vario Air, EK43 and Guatemala Lab.
New World Champion in Cup Tasting is Pang-Yu Liu from Taiwan, being the first ever competitor from his country and the first ever Asian winner in this competition. He managed to get six out of eight triangles right in the shortest time of all four finalists. All coffees were ground backstage on two Guatemala Lab grinders and brewed on more than ten Technivorm-machines. Backstage in the practice and preparation areas all competitors worked together really closely. Any competitiveness was beaten by sharing knowledge and helping each other. All participants acknowledged that solidarity and cooperation backstage was the most important experience of the whole championship.
Mahlkönig is proud and honored to be part of these experiences and we will continue to support baristas worldwide in their professional work
