Expo 2015 S.p.A. announces that it has obtained the certification of compliance with the international standard ISO 20121: 2012 for its Management System for Event Sustainability.

This recognition is related to the activities of planning actions concerning the organization of the Universal Exposition. The certification was issued to the company Expo 2015 by the third party certification entity, DNV GL.

This is absolutely a first for the organization of a Universal Exposition and the second for a major event of international importance, after the London Olympics of 2012, to have developed a formalized and recognizable system for analysis and management of sustainability issues.

“Expo Milano 2015 – said the CEO of Expo 2015 S.p.A. Giuseppe Sala – wants to promote an international, educational, cultural and sharing experience for all its guests and participants, promoting dialogue between the different citizens of the planet and helping to strengthen cooperation among populations.

We are working to ensure that what will open in a few months will be the first Universal Exposition to use tools that can help us to better manage our environmental, social and economic issues.

For this I am very pleased with this important recognition granted to Expo 2015 by an external certification organization, our Management System for Event Sustainability and for planning activities, complies with the international standard ISO 20121: 2012 and allows us to continue to pursue efficiency, involvement and external transparency; all important goals for Milan Expo 2015.”

“Sustainable management of an event is a major challenge in which the Company Expo 2015 has decided to solidify in front of a global audience.

The result demonstrates the commitment of all the people who have actively participated in the project, and have become the protagonists of a forward-looking and concrete approach that sees sustainability as a key point for the success of this important event, “said Nicola Privato, Regional Manager South Europe DNV GL – Business Assurance.

Underlining the commitment of Expo Milano 2015 to the environment is the publication of the second edition of the Sustainability Report. Opening in May is, in fact, the first Universal Exposition to be equipped with a tool that allows everyone to monitor the activities undertaken on this front.

Another Italian event took the lead previously. In 2006 the Winter Olympics in Turin were the first Olympics to publish a Sustainability Report and Expo Milano 2015, which follows the GRI Guidelines-G4, will become an international benchmark for future Expos.

The next survey will be published at the end of the Event, sharing what has been done during the six months of the Exhibition.

The ISO 20121 is a management standard for the organization of sustainable events. In the case of Expo 2015 S.p.A., at this stage of preparation of the Universal Exhibition in Milan, includes, for example, audits of the environment and safety on construction sites, design support with green criteria for the participant’s products, waste management, the inventory of CO2 emissions and their compensation and a system of green purchasing.

The Sustainability Report 2014 of Expo 2015 S.p.A. is related to the activities conducted in the year from June 2013 (when the first Report was documented) through June 2014; they were prepared following the GRI-G4 standard recognized as the best international methodology (www.globalreporting.org) for reporting on sustainability
