MILAN – The Italian National Commission of UNESCO didn’t accept the candidacy of Espresso culture for UNESCO intangible cultural heritage status. Instead, the Commission will support two candidacy proposals – “Tocatì, a shared programme for the safeguarding of traditional games and sports” and the transnational candidacy “Cavalli Lipizzani – Lipizzan horse breeding traditions”.
The Ministry of Agriculture had presented two separate candidacies – Rite of traditional Italian espresso coffee and the Culture of Neapolitan espresso. The first one was presented at the beginning of 2019, the latter in the middle of last year.
Both have already been included in the Inventory of Italian agri-food products (Inpai).
The Commission has called the promoters of the two candidacies to present a new joint candidacy for 2023 focusing even more on the ritual and social elements of the Italian coffee ritual.
