Negros Island aims to produce third wave coffee brand

NEGROS ISLAND, The Philippines – The Negros Island coffee sector is hoping to make the region a producer of third wave coffee brands, Rachel Nufable, Department of Trade and Industry-Neg. Occ. Division Chief, said.

The interim organization, Negros Island Coffee Association, is planning to rebrand the region as a source of coffee brands with geographic indications such as Mount Kanlaon.

Nufable said the coffee sector in the region being revived and under rehabilitation, supported by the collaboration of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, Provincial Environment Management Office, DTI and NICA.

More than 30 coffee farmers in Brgy. Cabacungan, La Castellana were trained in the cultural practices of coffee production by OPA on July 18-19, she said.

An agri-preneurship workshop is also set in August by the DTI to harness the skills of the farmers.

DTI is also helping to strengthen the association and works together with partners to maximize the resources of stakeholders, Nufable added.
