ZURICH, Switzerland – Nespresso and Amcor have received the Alufoil Trophy in the Resource Efficiency Category, from the European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA), for the ASI aluminium coffee capsule. A joint development with the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), the capsule uses ASI-certified aluminium to improve the sustainability performance of the product.
The metal is produced and sourced from its mined or recycled source and through each step in the value chain, as per ASI’s standards.

Amcor is proud to win this award with our valued partner Nespresso, as we work together towards a responsible, ethical, transparent and more sustainable aluminium supply chain,” said Gerald Rebitzer, Sustainability Director for Amcor Flexibles.
Amcor is an ASI member with five production sites holding ASI Standards certification. It also has a responsible sourcing program that addresses practices along the full aluminium chain: from upstream production through to downstream use sectors.
With development at Amcor’s ASI-certified sites, the aluminium used to produce Nespresso’s capsules was responsibly sourced and met consumers’ increasing sustainability expectations.
EAFA’s judging panel of industry experts from the aluminium sector said, “This is a holistic entry which does the whole industry credit. It helps to create a standard in the market to which we can all aspire. Amcor and its partners are pioneering responsible sourcing of aluminium foil. The initiative creates a chain of custody as the whole process needs to be certified.”
The ASI standards for sustainable aluminium provide greater transparency across the aluminium supply chain that will benefit consumers, companies and the environment. Nespresso, an active ASI member, has been working since 2009 with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and other stakeholders to assess sustainability challenges, opportunities and needs surrounding the aluminium supply chain.
