PLETTERNBERG-OHLE, Germany – A global leader in aluminium rolling and recycling, Novelis, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hindalco Industries Limited, is known for its closed-loop recycling system which contributes to reduced landfill waste and low energy consumption. The company has the world’s highest recycling capacity of over 2.2 million tonnes of aluminium per year.

Novelis has taken a lead role in developing low-carbon aluminium solutions for the packaging, aerospace and automotive industries. Aluminium offers unique benefits to multiple industries as it is strong, lightweight and infinitely recyclable. It is the perfect material for resource efficiency and a circular economy.

Presently, Novelis’ facility in Pletternberg-Ohle, Germany, is responsible for supplying the majority of the world’s aluminium coffee capsules. The starting material for the coffee capsules is cast in Nachterstedt, where Novelis has the world’s largest, most technologically advanced aluminium recycling centre. It is then processed in the Ohle facility to meet coffee producers’ most stringent demands. Apart from being a more sustainable alternative to plastic, aluminium capsules’ unique barrier properties do an excellent job of preserving the freshness and aroma of coffee and protect it from oxygen, light and humidity.

In 2020, Novelis began supplying aluminium coffee capsules to Nespresso, composed of 80% recycled aluminium. By increasing the use of recycled content in its aluminium, Novelis is an active contributor to a circular economy and lower energy consumption.

In 2022, Novelis announced a major investment of $30 million to build a new continuous annealing line at its Ohle plant. This additional line, expected to begin operation in 2024, will double the facility’s aluminium capacity for use in the production of coffee capsules and strengthen Novelis’ leadership in high-recycled content packaging solutions. The move comes in response to the growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions by coffee manufacturers and coffee drinkers worldwide.

“The investment demonstrates our commitment to serve as a trusted partner for our food and packaging industry customers and create more sustainable solutions for consumers. Increasing the use of recycled aluminium helps us reduce the use of natural resources, strengthen the circular economy and thus limit climate change,” says Emilio Braghi, Executive Vice President and President, Novelis Europe.

Novelis’ innovative low-carbon aluminium solutions and recycling loops for end-of-life scrap will take us a step further towards our vision of being a solutions-oriented manufacturer, committed to building a greener world.
