BOGOTÁ, Colombia – A total of 1,171 lots from 12 coffee departments (Antioquia, Caldas, Cauca, Cundinamarca, Huila, Nariño, Norte de Santander, Risaralda, Santander, Quindío, Tolima and Valle del Cauca) were received after the call for the Third National Quality Competition Colombia, Land of Diversity, which recognizes the excellence, quality and diversity of the country’s coffee.
The competition will reward two categories: Small and Large Lots. The best coffee lots will be recognized according to five attributes to be evaluated, with a distinction of 25 million pesos for each winner.
- Acidity
- Body
- Mildness
- Balance
- Exotic
The competition seeks to continue positioning Colombian specialty coffee in differentiated high-value niche markets, paying tribute to the dedication and perseverance of farmers who produce coffee of the highest quality. It also recognizes diversity and plurality of coffee flavors and opens up markets for specialty coffee by contacting customers willing to pay a better price for it.
The competition is gaining more and more strength, not only because of producers themselves’ response, seeking to see their effort and commitment to quality rewarded, but also because of the growing number of national and international buyers for whom the competition has become a new benchmark in the global specialty coffee industry.
Best coffees will participate in international auction
The cupping of coffee lots will take place from October 1 to 4 (Monday through Thursday), and on Friday 5 will be held the awards ceremony of the winning lots, which includes an economic recognition and a place to participate in an exciting live auction, which will take place immediately after the awards ceremony before local and foreign bidders.
Cafés de Colombia Expo, from October 3 to 6, brings together in a single place the whole coffee value chain, from seed to cup, and is the main showcase to publicize the great variety of Colombian coffee, as well as trends and innovations in the industry on a national and international scale.
