TRIESTE, Italy – illycaffè, the global leader in high-quality sustainable coffee, is once again an official sponsor of Ein Prosit, the event celebrating culinary excellence, to be held in Udine from October 16 to 20. The festival blends the traditional gastronomy of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region with international haute cuisine: 90 top chefs from over 20 countries will showcase fine dining, collaborating to create 50 Signature Dinners.

illy is the event’s official coffee: it will be served at the end of every tasting menu, rounding out the gourmet experiences offered by some of the leading lights of haute cuisine, many of whom are illy Chef Ambassadors – from Massimo Bottura to Antonia Klugmann, including Jessica Rosval, Niko Romito, Mauro Uliassi, and pastry chef Gianluca Fusto.

“We are happy to renew our alliance with Ein Prosit, a major event for our region that reminds us of the importance of excellence in gastronomy in Italy and abroad. Together with our Chef Ambassadors and thanks to the support of illy’s Università del Caffè, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of its foundation this year, we will bring our experience to the table to help promote a better culture around one of the world’s most appreciated beverages”, commented Cristina Scocchia, CEO of illycaffè.

As part of Ein Prosit’s rich bill of events, in the “Flavour Workshops” programme, the Università del Caffè will offer three Tasting lessons at Caffè Contarena on Saturday, October 19, at 11:00 am, 12:30 pm, and 2:00 pm. Participants will discover the illy blend 100% Arabica in its roasting shades. Also on Saturday, from 9:00 am to 10:30 am, the venue will open its doors to the public for a Good morning with illy as a chance to enjoy a morning coffee.

These events are free of charge upon registration at: https://www.einprosit.org/laboratori-dei-sapori/contarena/laboratori/

In addition to espresso, which will be offered at all dinners and dedicated events, the illy Signature Drink for Ein Prosit, an exclusive recipe based on illy Cold Brew Ready to Drink created with different interpretations by the Master Bartenders participating in the festival, will be featured during all cocktails and happy hours.

Julius Meinl Group’s CEO Marcel Löffler: “In Usa we expect to have a 100 mln business in 7-8 years”

julius meinl Löffler
Marcel Löffler, Julius Meinl Group CEO and Chairman, at the Mein Barista Cup stage in Vienna

VIENNA, Austria – Marcel Löffler, Julius Meinl Group CEO and Chairman, shared his view about the business plan of the company focusing on the expansion of the international market, explaining how the brand approach to business changed during the last decade. Below, we share his opinions.

The Meinl Barista Cup was the first competition created by Julius Meinl. What does the Cup mean for Julius Meinl?

“The idea is more than a competition. The baristas competing are trying to get the best out of the coffee beans they are working with. This is about quality. Product quality and premium quality were always the core elements of our culture.

This is why the Meinl Barista Cup is so important to us. Also, we must not forget the service part involving the coffee machines and the grinders that are crucial to guarantee a top-quality experience to the customers.

Also this, of course, represents a social event: socializing is at the heart of Viennese coffee culture. This competition is not meant only to offer artists an opportunity to compete and to show their passion but it is also a reflection of our culture”.

What is your business plan in Italy?

“We have been present in the Italian market for a long time. Italy is an extended home market for us. We tried to merge the Viennese coffe culture in the competitive Italian market: this helped us to strengthen ourselves.

We are currently ranked between number 6 and 7 in Horeca companies out of 920 and we intend to grow even more and rank at least number 5 and even further. Italy is a core market for us”.

Last year you mentioned that Julius Meinl wants to focus more on the international market (especially the USA). How is the expansion going?

“We are delighted with our job in the USA. Of course, the first years are the most difficult ones but we were able to successfully establish our gastronomy horeca business in Florida, in Washington D.C., and in Chicago.

Now we have a strong presence in the USA with 15 million in gastronomy but potentially we want to achieve our presence with a 100 million business in 7-8 years. In the USA we are also looking for acquisitions to move up.

We are still in an early stage so we need to experiment as much as we can. We need at least 3 years to really push in the consumer market in the USA”.

How would you say Julius Meinl’s approach to business changed during the last decade considering the pandemic, the war, the inflation, the energy and raw materials crisis?

“First of all, our web platform needed to be more stable to grow. We needed a robust IT infrastructure which we now implemented with SAP 4 (an enterprise resource planning software for large enterprises). And we also deeply explored the digital world. Through the pandemic, both factors, this IT infrastructure, and the digital component became much more important to our business.

We are in the middle of a transformation process here on IT and digitalization, which is now in the second half of the implementation. But that was dramatically strengthened through the pandemic.

The second thing is efficiency. And the third component is horeca. We love gastronomy but when in 2020 all our shops across the world were closed, we said “We need something else”. And so reaching out to the end consumers in retail became a priority.

Then we started paying even more attention to sustainability as we celebrated 160 years. We want to ensure that we, as a company, can last another 160 years, but also we want to make sure there is coffee for another 160 years. But the pandemic together, of course, with the global warming has shown us that business models can suddendly change, and I think our commitment to sustainable initiatives has tripled in our core business in the past 10 years.

Also, if a company has a CRM model (customer relationship management),  it is possible to steer their sales force better.

In that case, you can understand better your customers. Thanks to AI you can talk to consumers with artificial voice, so you can have a digital sales force on top of your own sales force and you can double results. So this is for us: the digitalization, the e-commerce side, and understanding better your needs.

For Julius Meinl, since we always focused on the traditional aspect, it is also fundamental that we fully absorb it the technological aspect“.

What are the countries that have a stronger presence in Julius Meinl sales?

“Our best countries in terms of sales are Austria, Romania, Croatia, Italy, Poland, and new markets in which we are investing more like Germany and the United States: of course, they are not the same size, but those are our future markets together with Italy and Poland”.

What are the company numbers when it comes to net sales?

“In Italy, from a net sales perspective, we are expecting a 4-5% organic growth.  I would see us doubling our business in the next 5 or 6 years. And that will not happen without an organic growth, which is acquisitions”.

Coffee futures prices ease on improved weather prospects in Brazil over the last week

MILAN – It was an up-and-down week for coffee futures prices, following the sharp declines caused earlier this month by the proposed postponement of Eudr implementation and the forecast of rain in Brazil. In New York, the December expiry contract closed down 270 points (-1%) at 252.05 cents on Friday, 11 October, mainly affected by the depreciation of the Brazilian currency, at 1-month low.

In the previous three days, the Arabica market had three positive sessions, recovering most of the losses suffered in the session of Monday, 7 October, when the benchmark plunged 1,270 points to 244.65 cents.

Among the factors supporting coffee futures prices were lingering uncertainties on the weather front and falling certified stocks, which dip to a 4-month low in New York and 4-3/4-low in London.

New York lost 530 points from the prior week. Similarly, the ICE Robusta’s main contract for January delivery ended the week at $4,678, or 3.7% less than on Friday 4th October.

Data and maps from the Brazilian National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) show rainfall totals of 15mm in much of Minas Gerais (the main Arabica-producing state) and 20mm in Espírito Santo (the main Robusta-producing state) in the five days from Monday to last Friday.

The rain continued over the weekend. As already written, the first spring rains are essential to trigger the main flowering of the trees, which then need further regular rainfall in good quantities for fruit setting and ripening.

Even if the rainfall regime in the coming months is adequate, it will not be possible to recover the part of the crop potential that has already been lost due to over four months of drought.

Meanwhile, we are approaching the start of the harvest season in Vietnam, which typically begins at the turn of October and November.

Despite improved weather conditions following the severe drought earlier in the year, the 2024/25 crop is expected to be even smaller than last year’s, which was already the lowest in four years.

Anyway, the arrival of the new crop in the market, which will begin in the final weeks of the year, is set to alleviate the supply tightness on the Robusta front easing market tensions a bit.

Meanwhile, some areas of Colombia and Central America are entering the main harvest period, which will improve the availability of washed Arabicas in the coming months.

While the postponement of the application of the EUDR is taken for granted – even though the measure still needs the green light from the Council and the European Parliament – there are already those who complain that the postponement will harm the companies who had already taken steps to comply.

The EU’s vegoil and oilmeal group Fediol said its members – which include trading giants such as Cargill and food processors like AAK – will suffer losses from a delay after paying premiums to secure raw materials that comply with the law.

“It’s a financial loss they are making by having been ready on time,” Fediol director general Nathalie Lecocq told Reuters.

The same applies to all the other sectors affected by the regulation. For example, a research published last month by Fefac, an EU animal feed industry body, estimates that EUDR compliant soybeans would cost 5-10% above regular beans.

PATROCINIO, Brazil – The Cerrado Mineiro Region, the first coffee-growing area in Brazil to achieve Designation of Origin (DO) status, has successfully wrapped up its Road Show in Italy. The tour culminated with a high-profile event at the Brazilian Embassy in Rome, located in the historic Piazza Navona, a building that dates back to 1644 and was acquired by the Brazilian government in 1964.

This closing event saw a qualified audience of 75 attendees, including importers, roasters, influencers, journalists, and representatives from governments and institutions. The guest list included Andrea Illy, Chairman of Illycaffè; Alessandro Bucci, Director of Procurement at Illycaffè; Vanusia Nogueira, Director of the International Coffee Organization (ICO), and Renato Mosca, the Brazilian Ambassador to Rome.

During his remarks, Andrea Illy emphasized the long-standing partnership with the Cerrado Mineiro Region, which spans over 33 years. He expressed deep gratitude for this relationship, noting how Illycaffè views Cerrado Mineiro as a highly structured, professional region equipped with advanced technology and sustainability to meet global demand.

“The Cerrado Mineiro Region has been a pioneer, particularly in regenerative agriculture, which is currently the flagship focus of Illycaffè. We believe in the region’s potential as a leading origin and its forward-thinking approach to preparing its properties for the future of coffee production,” Illy said during the event.

Adding to Illycaffè’s legacy, the company has been a pioneer in improving coffee production quality worldwide. This history is intertwined with Cerrado Mineiro’s success through the Illy Prize, which confirms the value of the best coffee beans and fosters innovation. As a leader in sustainability within the global coffee industry, Illy promotes regenerative agriculture practices and delivers this message intelligently to consumers. With the launch of Arabica Selection Brasile Cerrado Mineiro in over 60 countries, Illy continues highlighting Cerrado Mineiro’s premium status globally.

The Road Show promoted the culture, quality, sustainability, and Denomination of Origin of the Cerrado Mineiro Region to this prestigious audience. It marked an important step in its internationalization strategy and its efforts to generate demand for origin-certified coffees.

Given its historical and cultural ties to coffee, Italy, a key global coffee market, was strategically selected for this initiative.

Gláucio de Castro, President of the Cerrado Coffee Growers Federation, reflected on the tour’s success: “Italy’s coffee culture aligns closely with our values of quality and authenticity. The partnerships we’ve developed here are crucial for continuing to deliver value to consumers and reinforcing our commitment to sustainability and origin.”

Cerrado Mineiro Road Show Highlights:

  • Milan: Kicked off with public cuppings and industry-focused events with Illycaffè and Cafezal Milano, showcasing regenerative agricultural practices.
  • Florence: Hosted by Ditta Artigianale, discussions emphasized the unique terroir and the importance of Cerrado Mineiro’s DO certification.
  • Rome: The final event at the Brazilian Embassy brought together influential figures from both Brazil and Italy’s coffee industries to highlight the future of sustainability and controlled-origin coffee.

TechnoServe Coffee lead backs decision to delay EUDR implementation, lays out priorities ahead of new deadline of December 2025

ARLINGTON, VA, USA – In response to the European Commission’s updated guidance on the EU Deforestation Regulations (EUDR) and proposal to delay implementation of the regulations until December 2025, TechnoServe Global Coffee Director Paul Stewart issued the following comment:

“The recommendation by the European Commission to delay implementation of EUDR until December 2025 is the right decision for coffee farmers.

EUDR is a critical tool for protecting the environment and combating climate change. However, the lack of preparedness felt by many across the coffee sector risked leaving millions of smallholder farmers without access to markets that are critical to their livelihoods–not because these farmers contribute to deforestation, but because the systems are not yet in place to prove that they don’t.

Without the looming December 2024 deadline, the sector has time to work collaboratively on solutions that ensure smallholder farmers can access markets and benefit from more transparent supply chains.

This must include the hard work of building collaboration between the private and public sectors to stop deforestation, rather than simply redirecting commodities from deforested land to other markets.

Ultimately, EUDR has the potential to benefit both the planet and smallholder livelihoods. We must work together over the next 12 months to turn that opportunity into reality,” concluded TechnoServe Global Coffee Director.

The Minority & Women’s Business Award, sponsored by National Grid, recognizes minority, women and LGBTQ businesses for their success and is consistent with The Business Council’s core belief of promoting economic growth and prosperity for all. Ms. Hossain added, “As part of our commitment to making a positive impact, 100 percent of our profits are donated to help end hunger. Martinez. “The company’s commitment to donating all profits to hunger relief is a testament to the power of purpose-driven entrepreneurship. I am proud to have nominated it for this well-deserved recognition.”

Smart Label Award 2025 gets into full swing

Smart Label
Smart Label 2025 poster

MILAN, Italy – The Ho.Re.Ca. industry is back to growth. In its analysis of a report by FIPE, the Italian association of public establishments, Bain & Company Italy highlights a 4 to 5 percent revenue increase in 2024. In turn, a McKinsey & Company study shows tourism –a relevant contribution to the out-of-home business– represents about 10 percent of Italy’s GDP.

These figures are fostering investment: on the one hand, through the creation of phygital experiences and, especially, by integrating artificial intelligence; on the other, in the development of eco-friendly materials, multisensory interactions, biomaterials, and carbon-free production processes. These innovations and innovative design approaches will have an increasing impact on restaurants and hospitality.

For the past thirteen years, the relationship between innovative design and Ho.Re.Ca. has been explored by Smart Label – Host Innovation Award, the award promoted by HostMilano and Fiera Milano in partnership with POLI.design and under the patronage of ADI – Association for Industrial Design. The award is a reference for designers who want to offer the market cutting-edge answers that stand out in terms of change, functions, technological development, and environmental, social and economic sustainability. During the previous six editions, a total of about 950 applications were submitted, with more than 280 products awarded.

The nominated projects explore four macro-areas: Smart Label, Innovation Smart Label, Green Smart Label, and Special Mentions. Over time, many proposals have emphasized co-creation and user experience, shared products and activities where users increasingly become part of processes, thanks to devices and technologies empowering them. These include award-winning automated or semi-automated systems for real-time food preparation. A certainly important trend is sustainability: recycled materials and technologies that reduce consumption are highly valued by the contest. Connectedness is the third theme. Smart and connected objects that create ecosystems to optimize use, initiate planned and preventive maintenance processes, control costs and avoid malfunctions or block the supply chain, such as IoT projects capable of connecting different realities and generating ecosystems for use by the supply chain). Finally, solutions that meet new food styles and facilitate food inclusion, i.e., those “flexible” products that meet user needs and preferences, such as devices to manage preparations in parallel and, therefore, respond to special nutritional needs or specific ethical choices.

For the seventh edition too, prizes will be awarded during HostMilano, the world’s leading exhibition for professional hospitality and out-from-home, that will be held at fieramilano – Rho from 17 to 21 October 2025. A committee composed of Politecnico di Milano professors and industry experts will evaluate proposals for the Smart Label, Innovation Smart Label and Green Smart Label categories. Special Mentions are also planned for food & beverage products. The deadline for submissions is 30 April 2025. Here, full details on application rules.

As for the previous editions, awarded products will be displayed in the Smart Label area during HostMilano 2025, and an INDEX will be released. collecting product images and histories. The area will be complemented by the Design Talks, refresher seminars dedicated to architects and experts in the hospitality sector that will delve into the themes of sustainable innovation in design, concepts and formats. This initiative is another outcome of the partnership between HostMilano and POLI.design, under the patronage of NEWH – The Hospitality Industry Network.
