BROOKLYN, N.Y., USA – Matto Espresso, the premier specialty coffee brand known for its innovative approach to quality and accessibility, is thrilled to announce the opening of its new luxury cart location at Brooklyn College the week of October 14th. This expansion marks a significant milestone in Matto’s growth strategy, as the company anticipates that Brooklyn College will perform at a level similar to, if not exceeding, the exceptional performance of its top 5 location at NYU Stern.

With the price of coffee in the United States having surged by up to 77% from 2020 to 2024, Matto stands out by offering 60% of its menu items for just $3. This commitment to the highest quality coffee at an amazing price resonates deeply with customers, as evidenced by the fact that 86% of all app orders are placed from the $3 menu. The average price of specialty coffee at Matto is $3, in stark contrast to the $5.46 average at competing establishments.

“Our proprietary app has revolutionized the coffee experience for our customers, driving 52% of our business and offering a frictionless ease-of-purchase,” said Jennifer Maman, Co-Founder of Matto Espresso. “As our app users have increased by an impressive 115% year to date—with 90% joining within the last 18 months—we’re excited to bring this innovative ordering process to Brooklyn College.”

At NYU Stern, where Matto has established its flagship university location, 62% of all orders are placed through the Matto App, contributing to 53% of the location’s revenue. This app-driven model has resulted in a remarkable repeat rate of four visits per week among its users, showcasing one of the highest customer retention rates across all Matto locations. Notably, 91.3% of app orders at NYU Stern come from the $3 menu, highlighting the popularity and demand for affordable options amongst the student population.

As Matto prepares for this exciting opening, the company remains committed to providing an unparalleled customer experience, supported by its technology-driven approach and quality. Following the launch at Brooklyn College, Matto looks forward to its next opening at Rutgers University, further expanding its reach and impact within university networks, as well as the larger New York metropolitan area.

Students and staff are invited to join Matto at Brooklyn College for a taste of quality coffee that doesn’t break the bank. The team can’t wait to welcome everyone.

Coffee futures prices rise for the third consecutive day on tight stocks, lingering weather woes

MILAN — Tightness in coffee inventories and lingering weather problems in Brazil and Vietnam continued to support the coffee futures markets, which rose for the third time in a row yesterday (Thursday, 10 October). The biggest gains were recorded in New York, where the contract for December delivery gained 470 points to close at 254.75 cents. The Ice Robusta coffee futures also inched higher: the contract for January delivery was 0.9% higher and settled at $4,742.

Certified stocks fell back last week to four-month lows in New York and London.

Trade relations between the coffee sectors of Vietnam and Italy were the focus of a Forum held on Wednesday, 9 October in Turin. The event was aimed at enhancing cooperation and partnerships between two “coffee powerhouses”.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Duong Hai Hung said the forum offered a valuable opportunity for both sides to discuss and explore the potential for establishing concrete collaboration across various stages of the coffee supply chain.

Nguyen Nam Hai, Chairman of the Vietnam Coffee – Cocoa Association (VICOFA), provided an overview of Vietnam’s coffee industry, which has positioned a global reputation in terms of plantation scale, productivity, and output.

It should be noted that more than one third of Vietnamese coffee in the hands of companies is certified as sustainable. Italy is the largest importer of Vietnamese coffee and the first customer is Lavazza.

According to Fabrizio Munegato, a representative of the Lavazza Group, Vietnamese businesses consistently demonstrate their capacity in coffee production and competitiveness, which undoubtedly provides momentum to further strengthen partnerships between businesses of the two countries.

The president of the Gruppo Italiano Torrefattori Caffè (GITC), Omar Zidarich, emphasised the many challenges that the Italian industry is facing, due to high prices, but also the logistical difficulties related to the war in the Middle East and the situation in the Red Šea.
Zidarich also said that GITC’s members wish to have access to information provided directly by coffee producers and exporters.

He stressed the importance of trade associations in Italy and the role played by the GITC in the coffee sector.

‘Italy is not only a coffee country because it has volume potential, but also because it has a united network of companies, which is not always the case in other countries”, he added.

Coffee Alliance for Excellence caps 7 years of impact in Peru with international recognition

LIMA – As it concludes seven years of implementation in Peru, the Coffee Alliance for Excellence (CAFE) has received recognition from two prestigious awards. On October 4th, it won in two categories–Prosperity and Partnership–at the Peru for the SDGs (Perú por los ODS) Awards, which celebrate initiatives that contribute to the country’s development. On October 3rd, CAFE’s innovation to treat coffee wastewater was presented as a finalist at the Swiss Coffee Trade Association’s Next Gen Sustainability Awards.

The recognition comes as the project, an initiative of USAID Peru implemented by TechnoServe with support from JDE Peet’s, shared its final results.

“We are honored that CAFE has received these distinctions,” said Sergio López, director of the project. “However, for CAFE and its partners, the greatest legacy of this initiative will be its lasting impact in making the coffee value chain in Peru more prosperous, regenerative, and inclusive.”

Carried out in the regions of Huánuco, San Martín, and Ucayali, the project has improved the incomes of thousands of coffee-growing families by integrating farmers into sustainable markets and promoting innovative practices that meet high environmental standards.

Since launching seven years ago, CAFE has:

  • Benefited more than 14,000 people
  • Increased farmers’ incomes by 206%
  • Improved coffee yields by 81%
  • Mobilized $44.8 million in financing
  • Facilitated $140 million in coffee sales.
  • Strategic Partnerships and Sustainability

CAFE worked closely with key actors from the public and private sectors, such as the Peruvian anti-drug agency DEVIDA, Promperú, Rainforest Alliance, and the Peruvian Coffee and Cocoa Chamber. These partnerships strengthened producer organizations’ management and promoted Peruvian coffee both nationally and internationally.

CAFE also collaborated with Root Capital and the Peruvian development bank COFIDE to create credit-and-savings unions (UNICAs) in the Peruvian Amazon, mobilizing more than $2 million in savings, loans, and interest for farming families with limited access to traditional finance.

Supporting regenerative agriculture

The program made important strides in helping farmers transition to regenerative coffee production:

  • 95% of participating farmers implemented regenerative practices
  • 5,787 obtained sustainable certifications
  • More than 12,000 hectares of coffee were planted under sustainable agroforestry systems
  • 130 million liters of wastewater were treated through 3,265 vetiver grass filtration ponds
  • Between 2022 and 2024 alone, the program helped farmers avoid 1,283 metric tons of carbon emissions.

Impact on women and youth

The project prioritized supporting women’s economic empowerment and the participation of young adults in the coffee value chain. Women saw a 347% increase in their incomes, and the income gap between men and women was reduced by 21%. Additionally, nearly 600 young people were trained in coffee tasting and barista skills, improving their opportunities in the coffee labor market.

Since 2022, JDE Peet’s and CAFE have worked with 2,000 families to eliminate child labor in agriculture, while the Starbucks Foundation has partnered with CAFE to empower 1,300 women in their social and economic development.

Innovation and advances in research

One of the key pillars of Alianza CAFÉ was applied research, which enabled farmers to adopt new technologies and improve their agricultural practices. In collaboration with World Coffee Research, the project evaluated coffee varieties for their potential; These findings were instrumental in establishing seedbeds with high productive potential.

Additionally, in collaboration with the International Potato Center, satellite images were used for remote sensing of nutritional stress in coffee fields, helping farmers to more efficiently use fertilizers and water.

MÄNNEDORF, Switzerland – Clarmondial – an independent investment advisory company that focuses on practical, profitable and creative solutions for social and environmental businesses – has received endorsement to proceed to Full Proposal development by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to launch a dedicated working capital and technical assistance facility for cocoa and coffee sourcing landscapes.

This new facility, the Accountable Cocoa and Coffee Tranche (ACCT), builds on the Food Securities Fund’s track record, and substantial demand from existing and new borrowers operating in cocoa, coffee and associated crops, in countries subject to climate change, and in response to emerging regulations (including the EU Deforestation Regulation – EUDR, and Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive – CSRD) and industry best practice.

While final approval is subject to the GCF Board, the ACCT has already received Non-Objection Letters from key cocoa and coffee origins, notably Côte d’Ivoire and Uganda, and is advanced discussions with other countries across Latin America & the Caribbean, Sub Saharan Africa, and South and Southeast Asia.

Tanja Havemann, Co-Founder and Director of Clarmondial, stated that: “The development of the Accountable Cocoa and Coffee Tranche builds on transactions that the Food Securities Fund has executed in these and related sectors, and the clear demand that stakeholders have for new and additional financing. We thank the governments of Uganda and Côte
d’Ivoire for their support and leadership and look forward to announcing the endorsement of additional countries soon.”

Mr. Marcel Yao, Climate Change and Ecological Transition Expert / Technical Advisor to the Minister in charge of International Cooperation and Resource Mobilization, Côte d’Ivoire, stated that “Securing large-scale funding from both the public and private sectors is essential for implementing Côte d’Ivoire’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), particularly for financing and promoting sustainable and climate-smart agricultural practices, including deforestation-free cocoa and coffee cultivation. The Ministry of Environment of Côte d’Ivoire, as the GCF focal point, is pleased to support the Accountable Cocoa and Coffee Tranche.”

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Water and Environment, Uganda, stated that: “Coffee provides for over 1.5 million smallholder farmers in Uganda.

Ensuring that this sector is appropriately financed is a climate adaptation priority, and one that has significant potential for mitigation. The Government of Uganda is pleased to demonstrate its leadership by being one of the first countries to endorse the Accountable Cocoa and Coffee Tranche.”

Other countries are expected to join the facility, which is scheduled for GCF board review in the first half of 2025.
