Moderate consumption of coffee is associated with lower risk of developing multiple cardiometabolic diseases, shows new study

WASHINGTON, DC, USA – Consuming moderate amounts of coffee and caffeine regularly may offer a protective effect against developing multiple cardiometabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and stroke, according to new research published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

Researchers found that regular coffee or caffeine intake, especially at moderate levels, was associated with a lower risk of new-onset cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CM), which refers to the coexistence of at least two cardiometabolic diseases.

The prevalence of individuals with multiple cardiometabolic diseases, or CM, is becoming an increasing public health concern as populations age around the world, notes the study.

Coffee and caffeine consumption could play an important protective role in almost all phases of CM development, researchers found.

“Consuming three cups of coffee, or 200-300 mg caffeine, per day might help to reduce the risk of developing cardiometabolic multimorbidity in individuals without any cardiometabolic disease,” said the study’s lead author Chaofu Ke, M.D., Ph.D., of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health at Suzhou Medical College of Soochow University, in Suzhou, China.

The study found that compared with non-consumers or consumers of less than 100mg caffeine per day, consumers of moderate amount of coffee (3 drinks per day) or caffeine (200-300 mg per day) had a 48.1% or 40.7% reduced risk for new-onset CM.

Ke and his colleagues based their findings on data from the UK Biobank, a large and detailed longitudinal dietary study with over 500,000 participants aged 37-73 years. The study excluded individuals who had ambiguous information on caffeine intake. The resulting pool of participants included a total of 172,315 individuals who were free of any cardiometabolic diseases at baseline for the analyses of caffeine, and a corresponding 188,091 individuals for the analyses of coffee and tea consumption.

The participants’ cardiometabolic diseases outcomes were identified from self-reported medical conditions, primary care data, linked inpatient hospital data and death registry records linked to the UK Biobank.

Coffee and caffeine intake at all levels were inversely associated with the risk of new-onset CM in participants without cardiometabolic diseases. Those who reported moderate coffee or caffeine intake had the lowest risk, the study found. Moderate coffee or caffeine intake was inversely associated with almost all developmental stages of CM.

“The findings highlight that promoting moderate amounts of coffee or caffeine intake as a dietary habit to healthy people might have far-reaching benefits for the prevention of CM,” Ke said.

Addressing a Research Gap

Numerous epidemiological studies have revealed the protective effects of coffee, tea and caffeine consumption on morbidity of single cardiometabolic diseases. However, the potential effects of these beverages on the development of CM were largely unknown.

The authors reviewed the available research on this topic and found people with single cardiometabolic disease may have a two-fold higher all-cause mortality risk than those free of any cardiometabolic diseases. By contrast, the researchers found individuals with CM may have an almost 4 to 7 times higher risk of all-cause mortality. The researchers also noted that CM may present higher risks of loss of physical function and mental stress than those with single diseases.

Other study authors include: Xujia Lu, Guochen Li, Luying Wu, Liping Shao, Yulong Fan, and Chen-Wei Pan of Soochow University; Xiaohong Zhu of Suzhou Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Suzhou, China; Ying Wu of the Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, China; and Yan Borné of Lund University in Malmö, Sweden.

The National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Project of MOE Key Laboratory of Geriatric Diseases and Immunology, and the Research on Key Technologies for the Prevention and Control of Major Diseases and Infectious Diseases in Suzhou funded the study.

The manuscript, “Habitual Coffee, Tea and Caffeine Consumption, Circulating Metabolites, and the Risk of Cardiometabolic Multimorbidity,” was published online, ahead print.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Tequila CAZADORES to celebrate Latin culture and our shared passion for coffee,” said Christina Minjares Allio, Assistant Brand Manager, Café Bustelo. “This collaboration not only brings together two beloved beverages but also honors the vibrant traditions and flavors that unite us.”

Coffee futures prices inch lower on profit taking after reaching new highs in London and NY

MILAN – Coffee futures prices experienced a slight downward correction yesterday, Monday 16 September, after hitting new all-time highs during trading. The Ice Robusta made strong new gains early in the day, with the main contract for November delivery reaching an intra-day high of $5,486, a new record for the 10-T contract. However, subsequent profit-taking saw prices fall below Friday’s levels and the session closed down $21 at $5,246.

It was a similar story in New York, where the December contract hit a new intraday high of 271.80 cents, only to fall back into negative territory and settle at 258.55 cents, 90 points below Friday’s close.

Yesterday’s partial profit taking did not change the overall picture, which is still dominated by weather woes, particularly in the world’s two largest coffee producing countries.

In Brazil, weather models are pointing to scattered rains for the rest of the month, which “won’t do the trick” said dealers quoted by Reuters. As for October rains, they said there is a lot more uncertainty over if they will suffice.

The drought that has been affecting Brazil for more than four months has led to a water deficit in the soil and severe vegetative stress in the trees aggravated by the lack of irrigation in a majority of southeast Arabica coffee farming districts.

“The potential of the 2025/26 Arabica crop is hanging by a thread,” said Rabobank analyst Carlos Mera, per Bloomberg.

“This problem comes at a time when the coffee industry is suffering from port congestion in several countries, global scarcity of containers, disruptions around the Red Sea, and also disappointing crops in Vietnam.”

In Vietnam, the main coffee districts in the Central Highlands have mostly escaped the impact of the Typhoon Yagi and should not be seriously affected.

However, local traders warn that the rainfall might have caused coffee berries to drop, hurting the quality, and disrupting drying operations, according to Reuters.

Vietnam could see wetter-than-normal weather in the next few months as the La Niña weather pattern is expected to develop.

The harvest season spans from November through January in Dak Lak, Dak Nong, and Lam Dong provinces.

The latest Commitment of Traders report from the Ice Arabica coffee futures market has seen the Non-Commercial speculative sector decrease their net long position by a mere 17 lots over the week of trade leading up to Tuesday 10th September to register a net long position of 39,084 lots on the day.

The longer-term Index Fund sector of the market have reduced their net long position by 1,078 lots over the same time, a net long position of 52,090 lots.

In London, the Robusta coffee market has seen the speculative Managed Money sector increase their net long position by 73 lots over the week of trade leading to Tuesday 10th September 2024: to register a new net long position of 35,106 lots.

BURLINGTON, Mass. and FRISCO, Texas, USA – Keurig, the best-selling single-serve coffee brewing system, today announced its partnership with Academy Award-nominated actor Anna Kendrick to launch the “Brew It All” marketing campaign. “Brew It All” takes a playful look at the often-photographed celebrity coffee shop run and highlights how Keurig’s newest innovation, the K-Brew+Chill brewer, delivers such an exceptional at-home iced coffee experience that it will make those sneaky shots a thing of the past.

“Some of my happiest moments in life are when I’m enjoying iced coffee, but some of my least favorite moments have been the pictures that have circulated when I’ve been caught-off guard exiting the coffee shop,” said actress and director Anna Kendrick.

“As someone who loves staying in and enjoying the comfort of home, the new K-Brew+Chill brewer from Keurig is a game-changer—no more running out just to get my fix! It’s amazing to be able to brew iced coffee at home that’s as cold and refreshing as what I’d get at my favorite coffee shop, all without leaving the house. I’m thrilled to partner with Keurig to share my new favorite brewer with other iced coffee lovers!”

Kendrick’s genuine love for iced coffee combined with her sharp wit and good-natured, self-deprecating humor made her the perfect partner for Keurig’s “Brew It All” campaign. Created in partnership with Havas New York and Formula, the campaign comes to life through a series of strategic and creative executions, including ad spots, social media posts from Kendrick, and a playful take on paparazzi photos that capture her “off-guard” during supposed coffee runs.

“We’ve all debated whether that iced coffee run is really worth leaving the house before you’re ready to face the day,” said Becky Opydyke, Senior Vice President, Marketing at Keurig Dr Pepper. “This campaign shows the impact that the K-Brew+Chill brewer’s first-of-its kind technology can have on your day-to-day life. Say goodbye to unnecessary coffee runs, and hello to premium iced coffee – as cold as the coffee shop – from the comfort of your home.”

The K-Brew+Chill brewer offers unparalleled convenience without sacrificing flavor by making full-flavored, perfectly chilled iced beverages in just three minutes or less, as well as delicious hot coffee using any K-Cup® pod. This versatile machine combines convenience with flavor, enhancing the entire at-home coffee experience.

  • QuickChill Technology™ brews coffee cold straight from the brewer, with less dilution, ensuring full-bodied flavor from first to last sip by flash-chilling the coffee after brewing, rapidly cooling it to a refreshing temperature. The result is as cold and refreshing as the coffee shop.
  • MultiStream Technology™ is breakthrough brewing technology that saturates the coffee grounds evenly to extract full flavor and aroma in every cup, hot or iced.
  • Hot and cold brewing capabilities for a hybrid at-home coffee experience, compatible with the full variety of Keurig K-Cup pods to create a wide range of hot or iced beverages.

Consumers can purchase the K-Brew + Chill brewer for $199.99 on Keurig.com or at major retailers nationwide.
