Paulig and Einride partner to electrify road transport in Sweden

HELSINKI, Finland – Paulig is making a significant move towards sustainable logistics by teaming up with Einride, a freight mobility company specializing in digital and electric heavy-duty freight. The collaboration aims to electrify Paulig’s major transports of Santa Maria products in Sweden, reducing CO2e emissions on selected routes by 87%. Paulig is aiming to reduce its emissions from its value chain by 50% by 2030.

The partnership with Einride will introduce a fleet of digitally optimized electric heavy-duty trucks and charging solutions across Paulig’s Swedish network. The largest shipments of Santa Maria products in the Gothenburg area, Sweden, cover a distance of 75,000 kilometers a year.

It is estimated that the operations will save 15,9 tons of CO2e each year, an 87% reduction compared to previous shipments made using trucks powered by renewable fuel HVO100 and biogas.

“Today, one of the most efficient ways to reduce CO2e emissions of transport is electrification. There are many existing solutions in logistics, and the key is to act fast and make them happen. We’re very proud to take this step with Einride as this lowers our climate impact in logistics in Sweden, while maintaining the efficiency and reliability expected in the industry,” says Thomas Panteli, SVP Supply Chain & Sourcing at Paulig.

Starting in August, the first wave will see two trucks and five trailers operating on Swedish roads. Einride’s digital freight platform will optimize the operations and the charging solution will power the fleet, ensuring that the beloved Santa Maria products are delivered more sustainably between Paulig’s customers, factories, warehouses and the port of Gothenburg in western Sweden.

“Partnering with Paulig to electrify their logistics is an important step in our mission to transform freight transport in the Nordics and beyond. Together, we are not only reducing emissions but also setting a new standard for efficiency and sustainability in the industry. This collaboration demonstrates how immediate action and innovation can lead to significant environmental benefits, showcasing Paulig’s true commitment to being a sustainability leader,” says Carl Ceder, VP Region Nordics at Einride.

On the road to electrifying all shipments

Paulig is an international company that operates in 13 countries and has production facilities and warehouses in six countries including Finland, Sweden, Estonia, UK, Spain and Belgium. Logistics constitutes about 4% of Paulig’s emissions within the value chain. While this percentage may seem modest, logistics represents a crucial area where numerous solutions are available to reduce emissions.

“Acting swiftly in these areas is imperative. Electrifying our shipments not only benefits the environment but also aligns with our commitment to delivering quality products more sustainably. We’re right now reviewing the logistics flows to see how we shall reach our ambition of electrifying all shipments, long and short distance haulage, from our factories and warehouses in the coming years,“ says Thomas Panteli.

Paulig is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% from its value chain and by 80% from its own operations in absolute terms by 2030 from the 2018 baseline

These science-based climate targets are approved by the Science Based Target initiative and are aligned with the Paris agreement 1.5C ambition.

MILAN – Despite a situation that remains very tense, the coffee futures markets experienced a relatively quiet day yesterday, Thursday 5 September. In New York, the contract for December delivery gained 105 points to close at 246.60 cents. In London, the contract for November delivery fell $1 to settle at $4,911. News from the world’s two largest producing countries continued to influence the coffee futures markets.

In Brazil, the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued a ‘red alert’ for drought risk across the country, while the normal start of the flowering season for the Arabica crop is only a few weeks away.

Meanwhile, preliminary export data released by the Brazilian government for August shows that green coffee exports totalled 3,451,183 bags, up around 4.9% on the same month last year.

In Vietnam, customs authorities report that the country shipped last month a total of 1,216,667 bags, 14.1% less than in August 2023.

This brings the total for the first 11 months of the 2023/24 coffee year to 23,441,199 bags: down 12.7% compared to the same period in 2022/23. Interestingly, export earnings, on the other hand, grew in the first 8 months of the calendar year by 34.8% to around $ 4 billion, reflecting this year’s surge in Robusta prices.

Ico anticipated that world exports of all forms of coffee reached 11.29 million bags in July, up 12.2% compared to the same month of 2023.

This brings cumulative exports for the first 10 months of the current coffee year to 115.01 million, up 10.5% on the same period in 2022/23.

Reassuring data came from Colombia, where production in August was 1,049,000 bags, up 20.3% on the same month last year.

This brings the output for the first 11 months of 2023/24 to a total of 11,678,000 bags, up 19.7% year-on-year. August exports rose by a quarter (+24.97%) to 1,021,000 bags, bringing the October to date total to 10,819,000 bags, an increase of 9.4%.

Fairtrade launches new living income reference price tool

COP27 fairtrade awards premium golden

BONN, Germany – As part of its growing portfolio of digital tools to help companies better understand how they can work to make sustainable supply chains a reality, Fairtrade International has built a new Living Income Reference Price tool. The tool, which is also accessible from Fairtrade International website, is designed to make it easier for companies to find out what prices they need to pay to enable living incomes and living wages.

Through an interactive map, users can look up Living Income Reference Prices by commodity or country. The users can also download a report that shows the factors that go into each price and how they were calculated.

Plus, there is a section that provides valuable information about Fairtrade’s Living Income strategy that puts decent livelihoods as a central element of sustainability.

To date, Fairtrade has more than a dozen country- or region-specific Living Income Reference Prices developed through a robust research and validation process with farmers and other local industry experts. The products are cocoa, coffee, coconuts, cashews, and mangoes, among others. Fairtrade also develops prices for companies, either based on a specific set of producers in a supply chain, or on a specific origin.

The tool, which will be updated with new information as it becomes available, is accessible in multiple languages including English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Living Wage Reference Prices will also be added to the tool, as Fairtrade launched its first such reference price for bananas in 2023.

Fairtrade’s 2021-2025 Global Strategy is built on four strategic priorities including digitalisation for fairer supply chains, which is Fairtrade’s focus on data, transparency, and traceability.

The new Living Income Reference Price tool is part of Fairtrade’s work in this area that includes among many initiatives a group of new digital tools such as Fairtrade Impact Map (2024) and the Fairtrade Risk Map (2023)to assist Fairtrade stakeholders.

The Fairtrade Impact Map displays data and information on more than 100 Fairtrade projects and commissioned studies around the world. The users of the tool can explore by country, region, commodity, theme, programme, or year.

They can also find key producer data by country, including number of producer organisations, farmers and workers, the Fairtrade products and volumes grown and sold, and the amount of Fairtrade Premium earned. The Fairtrade Risk Map supports all actors in global supply chains – farmers, worker organisations, retailers, brands – in assessing their human rights and environmental risks. Here too, users have a few options to explore by including country, commodity, or issue.

In 2023, Fairtrade launched its Banana Dashboard, a one-stop shop for cooperatives, traders, and retailers can learn more about Fairtrade banana producers, the advantages of Fairtrade certification system, including the Premium and how it’s used by producers, and opportunities to deepen relationships and impact on issues such as living wages and climate. Fairtrade plans to expand this type of dashboard into other key product areas in the future.

PARIS – In Paris, the coffee ritual becomes a real… attitude. The Italian brand dedicated to Specialty Coffee lands in the fashion capital for a three-day event dedicated to espresso of the highest level. From 7 to 9 September Barista Attitude will be at the Paris Coffee Show with two excellences from its range.

The public visiting the Parc Floral will be able to admire Pilot, the machine designed to guide the professional towards an excellent coffee, extracted in an easy and intuitive way.

Dedicated to those who are just beginning their journey as baristas and want to interface with an instrument of the highest quality but at the same time formative in its use, this product offers great safety and control.

The main feature, which distinguishes Pilot from all other single boiler machines, is the exclusive setting of the Pre-infusion parameters.

In fact, the machine allows you to set them wetting and infusion times. The wetting time allows you to set how long the water should wet the coffee, while the infusion time allows you to decide how long the brewed water should remain in contact with the coffee.

This important feature allows you to have personalised extractions according to the different coffees used, so that you can achieve the result you are looking for in the cup.
The two options can be set for each dose, for each group, and can be easily copied from one group to another.

It is a very useful solution for those who want to control the extraction parameters easily and effectively.

The Pilot is also equipped with the Barista Attitude cool touch wands. The Dry system and the high ergonomics of the wands guarantee a perfect result in milk-based drinks, preserving taste and quality.

Alongside Pilot, the Faro will be in action over the three days – a coffee grinder that guarantees consistency and precision through its intelligent weighing system. The Double Clump Crusher ensures that the grind is always uniform, solving any channelling problems once and for all.

The touch screen with user profiles offers maximum security for the parameters, which cannot be changed and are protected by a password.Another advantage of this exceptional product is that it is completely silent, thanks to the soundproofing that guarantees peace and quiet at all times of the day.

Barista Attitude therefore invites you to come to stand F17 – F20 in Hall Pinede 3 for a sensory and professional – journey that involves all the senses, where technology and form enhance the bonding power of tasting an espresso.

German Coffee Association honored as ‘Association of the Year 2024’ for sustainability efforts

The DGVM Award (image provided)

HAMBURG, Germany – The German Coffee Association has been named ‘Association of the Year 2024’ by the DGVM (German Association for Association Management) in recognition of its exceptional contributions to sustainability. This marks the third time the association has received this prestigious award, following previous wins in 2014 and 2018.

Leader in coffee sustainability initiatives

The jury was particularly impressed by the German Coffee Association’s innovative approaches and strategic efforts in promoting sustainability within the coffee industry. The association was honored for establishing cutting-edge services and tools designed to help its members comply with regulations such as the Supply Chain Duty of Care Act and the EU Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR).

These efforts include resources like the EUDR Coffee tools on the website www.eudr-coffee.eu, EAR4U www.ear4u.org, and joint risk assessments, which are vital in advancing sustainability in the coffee sector.

The association’s extensive programs, including the International Conference on Sustainable Coffee, the Deforestation-Free Coffee Forum, and the Sustainable Packaging Working Group, were highlighted for their high levels of industry participation and impact. Additionally, the association’s proactive dialogue with politicians and sustainability projects in coffee-producing countries further solidified its leadership in this area.

Commitment towards a sustainable coffee future

Holger Preibisch, CEO of the German Coffee Association since 2006, emphasized the coffee industry’s dedication to sustainability at every stage of production, from cultivation to packaging.” All of our members have one goal: to make the future even more sustainable. This is neither easy nor straightforward, which is why we are delighted to be honored as ‘Association of the Year’ in the Sustainability category.

It’s fun and a pleasure to represent such a committed industry and to be recognized as an association for our commitment,” says Preibisch, who previously received the ‘Association of the Year’ award in the “Reform and Management” category in 2018 and the “Representation of Interests and Communication” category in 2014.

Award-winning work

Preibisch: “The German Coffee Association’s recognition as ‘Association of the Year’ for sustainability is a testament to the professionalism and effectiveness of our efforts. We have seen a significant increase in membership, nearly tripling since 2011, with around 380 members today. Some of them have joined specifically to take advantage of our sustainability services. This growth reflects the value members place on the association’s sustainability initiatives, making it the largest national coffee association in Europe and a key voice in one of Germany’s most important economic sectors.”

Coffee is a victim and driver of climate change

On the one hand, coffee, like any agronomic product, also contributes to climate change. On the other hand, coffee cultivation in some parts of the world is threatened by climate change. Coffee is therefore both a victim and a driver of climate change. “Because it is affected by climate change, the coffee industry is aligning its actions with the standards of sustainability,” says Preibisch.

The German Coffee Association has a longstanding commitment to sustainability. For over 25 years, Fairtrade has been an active member of the association. More than 20 years ago, in collaboration with the German Government´s Implementing Agency for Technical Development and Cooparation (GTZ), the association launched the ‘4C’ coffee sustainability standard (“Common Code for the Coffee Community”), which now governs the cultivation of 18 percent of the world’s coffee.

The association’s “Environmental issues” committee has been meeting regularly for more than 15 years, and already a decade ago, it developed educational materials on “Climate Change, Global Trade, and Sustainability” specifically for secondary schools and vocational colleges. “Sustainability is integral to both coffee production and our association’s work. That’s why we’re so thrilled to be recognized as ‘Association of the Year’ in the sustainability category,” says Preibisch.

About the German Coffee Association

For more than 50 years, the German Coffee Association (Deutscher Kaffeeverband e.V.) has been the interest group for companies and organizations that trade, process, or otherwise manage coffee in Germany.

It represents around 380 companies along the entire coffee value chain – including sustainability organizations, coffee traders and brokers, coffee roasters, manufacturers of soluble coffee, decaffeinated coffee and roasting machine manufacturers, logistics companies, and laboratories. In 2014, 2018, and 2024, the German Coffee Association was honored as “Association of the Year” by the German Association for Association Management (DGVM).

About the DGVM Innovation Award

The DGVM Innovation Award ‘Association of the Year’ has been presented to associations for outstanding achievements in association management since 1997. It recognizes innovative and high-quality association management in the interests of the members, the respective sector, the industry, and the public. The award stands for services that clearly stand out from the average and can serve as an example for organisations to break new ground.
