MILAN – Coffee futures markets posted more gains on Wednesday: after a downward start, both terminals went up again, closing the day on a further recovery and at new historic highs. In London, the contract for November delivery gained $80, ending the day at a new all-time high of $4926 (intraday at $4944).

Dealers said the market was technically overbought and could fall back further in the short term. The market remained underpinned, however, by tight supplies exacerbated by farmers in Vietnam and Indonesia holding back coffee in expectation of higher prices, according to Reuters.

The Ice Arabica contract for December delivery gained 120 points to close at 256.45 cents, the highest level for the benchmark since February 2022. Continuing concerns remain about the situation in Brazil, where drought and rising temperatures could cause premature flowering, negatively affecting the next crop’s production potential.

The latest Commitment of Traders (COT) report from the New York market has seen the shorter term in nature Managed Money fund increase their net long position by 10.55% for the week ended Tuesday 20th August 2024, to a new long position at 57,468 lots.

The longer term in nature, Index Fund sector increased their net long position by 2.38% to register a new net long position of 49,168 lots.

Over the same week, the Non-Commercial Speculative increase their net long position by 11.59% to a new net long position of 43,474 lots, which is the equivalent of 12,324,686 bags.

Schaerer Coffee Soul “2-step”: Passion for coffee meets fully-automated perfection

ZUCHWIL, Switzerland – The coffee business today is characterized by the demand for efficient preparation of speciality coffees, which relieves staff and reduces costs. At the same time, the expectations of the quality and variety of beverages are higher than ever. With a high level of process automation and flexible machine concepts that can be configured to meet specific requirements, Swiss coffee machine manufacturer Schaerer helps its customers master this balancing act.

The latest example is the “2-step” configuration of the Schaerer Coffee Soul 10 and 12 available now. This variant does not feature a fully-automated milk system and instead offers steam wands with different degrees of automation for manual foaming.

This has a few different advantages: Since milk-based coffee beverages can be served much faster thanks to simultaneous preparation of espresso and milk foam, the waiting time for the end customer is reduced, especially at peak times.

Foaming in the mug also increases the flexibility of the product range in terms of milk types/plant-based drinks, meaning specific guest requests can be catered to in the best possible way. Another advantage is the lower investment and maintenance costs since no automatic milk system or cooling unit is needed.

Fully-automated frothing with barista flair

When a barista starts frothing milk, the familiar hiss of the steam wand immediately recalls an espresso beverage “made with love”. The Schaerer Coffee Soul with the “2-step” configuration creates precisely this feeling: While the espresso flows into the cup, the milk or vegan drink is frothed separately in a jug. Schaerer offers three different steam wands in order to meet the barista skills of the staff.

The “Supersteam” steam wand frothes completely automatically. The temperature and foam consistency can be pre-configured for up to eight different beverages. All the operator has to do is then place the full mug under the steam wand and touch the display to start the Supersteam frothing process. It will stop as soon as the desired result is achieved.

The service staff can carry out other tasks at the same time and, once the foam is ready, simply has to pour the perfectly foamed milk into the cup or glass containing the hot espresso. An alternative for partial automation of the process is the “Autosteam” steam wand: Frothing is switched off when the preset temperature is reached, but the foam consistency has to be monitored visually. If fully manual milk frothing is required, the “Powersteam” steam wand is available as an alternative. If the staff has the necessary barista skills, the coffee specialities can also be decorated with latte art in all three versions.

About Schaerer Coffee Soul 10 and 12

With an output of up to 250 cups a day, the Schaerer Coffee Soul 10 and 12 are ideal for busy areas. For even higher output, the machine can be equipped with a third boiler.

This allows hot water, steam and coffee to be prepared separately and simultaneously at different temperatures – an ideal upgrade during peak times. In addition to the new “2-step” configuration now introduced by Schaerer, the proven “Mix & Match” principle of the Schaerer Coffee Soul allows customers to individually choose which equipment they need for their coffee business – for example design elements, the number of grinders, fully automatic solutions for processing milk/vegan drinks or additional features such as the syrup station and hot & cold technology. In addition, various operating modes are available for operation by service staff or for self-service.

MILAN – Yesterday at the reopening after the bank holiday weekend, the Ice Robusta coffee futures resumed their upward trend to new historical peaks. New York coffee futures also went up sharply after Monday’s more modest gains. In London, the contract for November delivery gained 2.8% yesterday, Tuesday 27 August, closing at a new all-time high of $4,846 (intraday at $4,952).

The Ice Arabica’s contract for December delivery gained 2.2%, to settle at 255.25 cents, after having reached an intraday high of 259.45 cents, the highest level for the benchmark in two and a half years. In Brazil, the 2024/25 crop, which is almost completed, is coming in below initial expectations.

There are also fears that this year’s weather events – frost and, above all, the ongoing prolonged drought— may negatively impact next year’s harvest (2025/26).

According to Cooxupé, there has been no significant rainfall in several growing regions of Brazil for around 130 days.

Meanwhile, the first flowerings of the new Robusta crop has already begun in some areas of Espírito Santo, while flowering in the Arabica areas will begin with the arrival of the early spring rains, between September and October.

The Robusta market continues to be affected by the situation in Vietnam, where the weather has improved, but not enough to offset the negative impact of the drought in the first half of the year. In the first seven months of the year, the Indochinese country exported 16.066 million bags.

This represents a 13.8% drop in volume compared to the same period last year, but is offset by a 30.9% increase in value, to a record $3.54 billion.

According to an estimate made in early August by the authoritative Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (Vicofa), Vietnam currently has only about 148,000 tonnes of coffee left to export in the remaining 2 months of the 2023/2024 crop year.

Meanwhile, it is interesting to note that Espírito Santo – Brazil’s largest Robusta producing state – has increased its exports of all forms of coffee to the European Union almost eightfold this year.

Shipments to EU countries totalled 2.3 million bags in the first seven months of the year, mostly (2.25 million) green coffee: almost 2 million bags more than in the same period last year.

The EU thus absorbed 42.7% of the state’s exports, compared to 15.6% 2023. The main destination market was Belgium, with 805,700 bags, followed by Italy, with 462,900 bags, Germany (349,900 bags) and Spain (317,900 bags).

According to Enio Bergoli, Espírito Santo’s Secretary of State for Agriculture, increased exports towards the EU were also due to Vietnam’s lower exports and the logistical difficulties caused by the international situation, as well as the prospect of the imminent entry into force of the EUDR regulation.

But the result also reflects the investments in quality, productivity and advanced agronomic technologies made by producers in this Brazilian state.

ICE collaborates with Space Intelligence to launch ICE’s commodity traceability service in view of EUDR

LONDON, UK – Intercontinental Exchange, Inc., a leading global provider of technology and data, today announced that ICE Benchmark Administration Limited (IBA) is collaborating with Space Intelligence, a provider of high accuracy nature mapping data, to launch the ICE Commodity Traceability Service (ICE CoT).

ICE CoT is a technology platform designed to facilitate the continued frictionless trade of physical cocoa and coffee by automating the process of submitting, storing, validating and sharing due diligence information mandated by the European Union’s Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). The EUDR is designed to reduce the EU’s impact on global deforestation and forest degradation by requiring proof that specified goods entering or sold in the EU are “deforestation-free” and lawfully produced. Europe is the largest market for cocoa and coffee worldwide.

“We are excited to be working with Space Intelligence on the continued build-out of ICE CoT,” said Clive de Ruig, President of IBA. “As one of the world’s foremost experts in forest mapping using satellite data, their expertise in delivering highly accurate and comprehensive data will be critical to providing information on whether cocoa and coffee farm plots are deforestation-free.”

“Space Intelligence’s geospatial mapping capabilities will be integrated into ICE CoT, clearly indicating areas in cocoa and coffee producing countries that have been deforested post-December 31, 2020, and that are not eligible for the production of EUDR-compliant goods. This geospatial mapping data will work in tandem with ICE CoT’s farm and physical flow validation methodologies, utilizing farm geolocation and traceability information throughout the supply chain to support the tradability of commodities within the EU,” continued de Ruig.

“The EUDR means stakeholders across commodity markets need to be provided with trust in the compliance of the supply of goods entering the EU, which can be ensured by audit-grade mapping data supporting the verification process,” said Professor Ed Mitchard, Co-founder and Chief Scientist at Space Intelligence. “Our process generates mapping data that meets the stringent requirements of the EUDR, developed from decades of experience in remote sensing research and integrating ecology expertise with machine learning to achieve accuracy on a geographical scale. Our collaboration with IBA is a testament to our shared goal of ensuring customers can meet the requirements of the EUDR.”

In June 2024, ICE CoT commenced a pilot phase for validating cocoa and coffee farm geolocation data using a methodology developed by Meridia. The platform allows companies to upload farm plot coordinates and run a series of validation checks on the geolocation data. IBA expects to pilot the validation of physical flow data related to the movement, including merging or splitting, of cocoa and coffee parcels along the supply chain to its ultimate use or export, along with lawful production data, in the coming months.

ICE provides the largest markets in the world to trade cocoa and coffee through its benchmark Cocoa, London Cocoa, Coffee C® and Robusta Coffee futures and options markets. Last year the equivalent of over 500 million tons traded on ICE’s cocoa and coffee markets.

IBA plans to launch ICE CoT prior to the end of 2024. The platform remains subject to further testing, system and data availability, and any regulatory contingencies. For more information on ICE CoT, contact IBA-ICECoT@ice.com.
