PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea – It Is a very sad day, Mr. VS Jon Yogiyo (“Jon”), a legendary “coffee man” from the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea left us on August 21, 2024 to take his seat in the heaven.

Jon Yogiyo was a proud Papua New Guinean. He had 45 years of solid and varied coffee industry experience as a coffee farmer, exporter, agronomist, coffee research executive and chief executive officer.

As a highly regarded agronomist and coffee farmer, Jon created the “Tree to Cup “concept which was subsequently adopted by Starbucks. Accordingly, Jon was highly respected in the United States coffee market due to his innovative work marketing PNG coffee in the United States.

Importantly, Jon co-founded the first down stream vertically integrated organic and fair-trade certified coffee company in the consumer market of Berkeley, California. Leading to the famous Economist Magazine characterizing Jon as a “Out of Box” thinker in Agriculture in 2006.

Jon was an honest man with integrity. He devoted his entire life finding ways to improve the living standard of his fellow brothers and sisters of Papua New Guinea. Jon started Bauka school with his wife Mary to educate the children of the coffee farmers.

Coffee Egg, a cup of coffee and a cooled hardboiled egg packaged together

Coffee Egg
InventionHome logo

PITTSBURGH, PA, USA – Jinjin Y. of Bloomington, IN is the creator of the Coffee Egg, a cup of black coffee and a cooled hardboiled egg packaged together, functioning as a healthy and delicious on-the-go breakfast. Users can heat the black coffee in a microwave and then drop the egg into the hot coffee to warm it up and infuse it with a coffee flavor. The coffee is stored in a small cup that is sealed on the top, supporting the hardboiled egg in a second individual package.

Users can remove the egg package from the coffee and place the coffee in a microwave to heat it. Once warmed, the egg can be inserted into the coffee to simultaneously cool the coffee and heat the egg. The device offers a healthy, simple, delicious, and quick breakfast for coffee lovers.

Pre-soaked coffee hardboiled eggs may also be available in individual packaging. People on the go can enjoy a healthy and energy providing breakfast rather than eating sugary cereals, granola bars, and other carb-based products.

Busy people may have trouble eating breakfast during their day, abandoning an important meal to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Some breakfast products are high in calories, sugar, and carbohydrates, and people may have trouble finding quick breakfast meals that have higher fat and protein to meet their daily macros.

While not currently common among chosen breakfast food products, the concept of infusing a hardboiled egg with coffee flavor is interesting and may appeal to culinary experimenters or those who enjoy unique flavor combinations.

In Asian cuisine, tea eggs are a well-known delicacy where eggs are steeped in a mixture of tea, soy sauce, and spices to absorb the flavors. Experimenting with this recipe and utilizing coffee instead is an engaging idea, especially for those who enjoy their caffeine in the morning and the taste of coffee infused into other food items.

Given its novelty, the unique and innovative Coffee Egg product could be popular among food enthusiasts looking for new and unconventional experiences.

Jinjin filed her Utility Patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and is working closely with InventionHome, a leading invention licensing firm, to sell or license the patent rights to her Coffee Egg product. Ideal licensing candidates would be U.S. based product manufacturers or distributors looking to further develop and distribute this product innovation.

Coffee futures markets close to last month’s highs on excessive dryness in Brazil, tight supply

MILAN – Five consecutive gains have brought coffee futures markets close to last month’s highs. Yesterday, Tuesday 20th August, New York and London posted fresh gains, approaching the record levels seen in the first ten days of July. December Arabica coffee rose 1.7% to 248.50 cents. November Robusta coffee gained 3.2% to close at $4,619 after hitting a monthly high of $4,656.

Fundamentals remain unchanged, with climate issues in Brazil and Vietnam – exacerbated by the frost that hit the Brazilian coffee belt at the beginning of last week – fuelling fund buying in both coffee futures markets.

“The persistent dry weather in the arabica coffee regions is raising concerns about the productive potential of the next crop, especially if the rains are delayed,” said Guilherme Morya, coffee analyst at Rabobank.

According to Cooxupé, Brazil’s largest cooperative, the coffee trees in many growing regions have not received significant amounts of rain for around four months.

Somar Meteorology confirms that Minas Gerais has been completely dry for the past week. It is feared that the excessive dryness, combined with rising temperatures, could lead to premature flowering and flower abortion.

On the other hand, it is not yet possible to assess the consequences of the frost that occurred at the beginning of the second decade of August.

According to an initial assessment by experts, the frosts were much more localised and less intense than in 2021 and should not affect the production potential of the next harvest.

“The normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI), used to quantify the health and density of vegetation, is more positive in 2024 than in the same period in 2021, when the coffee plantations were hit by frost, and could help mitigate possible damage caused by low temperatures” says Laleska Moda, Coffee Analyst at Hedgepoint Global Markets, in an interview with Notícias Agrícolas.

“Monitoring the index over the next few weeks, as well as the early flowerings of the 2025/26 harvest, will give us a better idea of the possible damage caused to the crops and the production potential for the next cycle,” the analyst noted.

On the Robusta side, dealers say exports from Vietnam remain slow, while there was talk that farmers in Indonesia were holding onto stocks in the hope that prices may rise further, according to Reuters

Cold weather in Arabica regions worries Brazilian producers, says CEPEA

SAO PAULO, Brazil – Coffee prices were firm in Brazil in mid-August. This scenario is linked directly to the cold weather verified in most part of the Central-Southern area in Brazil, especially in arabica producing regions, reports CEPEA in its latest update.

Players surveyed by Cepea say that frosts were observed in some locations, such as Mogiana Paulista and Cerrado Mineiro. In the south of Minas Gerais, the weather was cold, but frosts have not been registered so far. Agents do not expect significant damages to the crops, although impacts have not been estimated consistently yet.

Besides the cold weather, the long period without rainfall on Brazilian coffee crops may affect plants that will produce in the next season (2025/26). It is still early to report about the development of the next crop, but initial conditions for 2025/26 crop treatments are already a challenge in Brazil.

The CEPEA/ESALQ Index for the Arabica coffee type 6, delivered in São Paulo, closed at BRL 1,408.08 per 60-kilo bag on August 15, downing only 0.55% compared to that on July 31.

The CEPEA/ESALQ Index for the robusta coffee type 6 closed at BRL 1,295.74 per 60-kilo bag on August 15, upping 1.92% in the same comparison. Robusta quotations resumed increasing, following rises observed for arabica, since robusta crops were not affected by frosts.

Brazilian coffee shipments increased 26% in July compared to the same period last year, totalling 3.8 million bags, a record for the month, according to data from Cecafé. Exports have been favored by Robusta sales: the amount shipped rose 82.2% from July/23 to July/24, while arabica exports upped 13%.
