ENSO and IOD likely to remain neutral in austral spring, reports BOM

La Niña El Niño Alert Enso Indian Ocean Dipole influence
The El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is currently neutral.

MELBOURNE, Australia – The El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is currently neutral, reports the Bureau of Meteorology of the Australian Government in its latest update. Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the central equatorial Pacific Ocean are ENSO-neutral, having gradually cooled from El Niño levels since December 2023.

This cooling is being sustained by deep waters surfacing in the central and eastern Pacific. However, the extent and magnitude of cool water has decreased since last fortnight. Atmospheric patterns, including cloud and trade winds, are currently ENSO-neutral.

Three of 7 climate models suggest the possibility of SSTs in the tropical Pacific exceeding the La Niña threshold (below −0.8 °C) from October, with a fourth just briefly reaching the threshold; the remaining 3 models suggest SSTs are likely to remain at ENSO-neutral values (between −0.8 °C to +0.8 °C ) throughout the forecast period. The ENSO Outlook remains at La Niña Watch. La Niña Watch does not guarantee La Niña development, only that there is about an equal chance of ENSO remaining neutral or La Niña developing during the remainder of 2024.

The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is currently neutral. In recent weeks, the east Indian Ocean has cooled, with the latest weekly IOD index value (as of 18 August) of +0.33 °C. However, most models indicate that the IOD is likely to remain neutral until at least the end of Austral spring.

Global SSTs were the warmest on record for each month between April 2023 and June 2024. July 2024 global SSTs were the second warmest on record, not as warm as July 2023 but much warmer than any other year. August 2024 is currently tracking as the second-warmest August on record. The current global pattern of warmth differs to historical patterns of SSTs associated with ENSO and IOD. This means future predictions of ENSO and IOD based on SSTs during past events may not be reliable. Phenomena such as ENSO and the IOD are only broad indicators of the expected climate. The long-range forecast provides better guidance on local rainfall and temperature patterns.

The Southern Annular Mode (SAM) is negative (as at 17 August). The index is forecast to become neutral during the coming week. During winter, a negative SAM typically increases the likelihood of rain-bearing fronts across southern Australia and decreases rainfall influenced by onshore flow in parts of the east.

A moderate pulse of the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) is currently in the Indian Ocean (as at 17 August). Models suggest the pulse will become weak as the MJO progresses to the Maritime Continent over the coming week. When the MJO is in the Indian Ocean at this time of year, it typically decreases rainfall over southern Australia.

QUITO, Ecuador – As part of its continued expansion across Latin America and the Caribbean, Starbucks Coffee Company, in partnership with licensed business operator Delonorte S.A., today announced the opening of its first store in Ecuador, representing the brand’s 25th market in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and 87th market globally. The opening also marks Starbucks 1,700th store in the LAC region.

Located at Scala Mall, a three-storied dining and shopping hub in Quito’s Cumbayá neighborhood, the new café is the first of five Starbucks stores planned for Ecuador within the coming year. A second store will open at Condado Mall on August 22, followed by a store at Centro Comercial Iñaquito in October and two additional stores in 2025.

Starbucks stores in Ecuador will be operated by Delonorte S.A., a subsidiary of Delosi, which manages 120 Starbucks locations in Peru and 7 locations in Bolivia. Delosi has been Starbucks trusted licensed business partner since 2003 when the operator unveiled Starbucks first store in the Andean region in Lima, Peru.

“We are tremendously proud to celebrate our 1,700th store in Latin America and the Caribbean with the opening of Ecuador’s first Starbucks café in the historic and vibrant city of Quito,” said Ricardo Arias-Nath, svp and president of Starbucks in Latin America and the Caribbean. “Starbucks has been sourcing high-quality Arabica coffee from Ecuador for over a decade, and with our first store opening in the market, we look forward to creating moments of connection over coffee for Ecuadorian customers and continuing the rich coffee traditions inherent to the region.”

Cristel Delgado, brand manager of Starbucks Ecuador added, “Our commitment to Ecuador is long-term. We are very happy to be able to connect with the market’s coffee culture and traditions, and we are honored to open our first store in Ecuador. We aim to make a positive impact in our communities by creating jobs, establishing a Third Place for our customers, elevating everyday moments, and providing flavorful experiences for our partners and customers. This is just the beginning of our efforts to foster connections and celebrate the vibrant spirit of our community.”

Sustainable Café with Design Inspired by Local Coffee Culture

Known for its rich history in coffee production, Ecuador is a market with a thriving coffee culture. The new store adds to this by offering a warm and familiar coffeehouse experience alongside Starbucks signature handcrafted beverages.

With a café and indoor terrace overlooking the Scala Shopping mall with combined seating for up to 50 people, the 140 m2 store has been meticulously designed to ensure that every visitor feels the passion for coffee that defines Starbucks. The store maximizes its impact by accentuating the bar, where the magic of coffee comes to life, and features modular wood panels, marble counters, and digital menu boards.

The art in Starbucks Scala Mall store is a celebration of local culture, thanks to the talent of renowned Ecuadorian artist Apitatán (also known as Juan Sebastián Aguirre Ríos), whose central mural intertwines themes of ancestry, nature, and coffee. It features a woman, symbolizing nature and coffee’s origins, who is flanked by local animals, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The side columns display a blooming Guayacán Andino tree, native to Ecuador, and a toucan over a coffee farm, with a jaguar-masked man inviting exploration on the opposite side. This detailed artwork reflects the local landscape’s beauty and diversity, balancing realism with artistic interpretation. The installation connects customers with Ecuador’s coffee culture, celebrating the bond between nature, heritage, and the coffee community.

The café is also certified as a Greener Store, as Starbucks accelerates the international expansion of its open-source Greener Store Framework in support of its global goal to reduce carbon, water, and waste footprints by 50% by 2030. Following extensive evaluation, industry benchmarking, and external expert consultation, the Greener Store program was designed around eight key dimensions: Site Criteria, Energy Efficiency, Water Stewardship, Waste Diversion, Renewable Energy, Responsible Materials, Engagement, Health & Well-being. These dimensions are strategically chosen to maximize the mitigation of Starbucks environmental impact.

When fully implemented, Greener Store design standards deliver more than a 25% improvement in energy performance and an absolute reduction in energy use of 10-15%. They also deliver more than a 30% improvement in store water usage. Lastly, Greener Store design and operational standards can deliver between 10-75% landfill diversion based on local infrastructure. Supporting packaging and reuse strategies will also reduce store waste, improve the recycling and composability of packaging, and promote reusability.

The Hartmann family from Panama at Ditta Artigianale in Florence: “What sets our coffee apart is the love for nature”

Ratibor Krzysztof Hartmann and Ratibor Hartmann

FLORENCE, Italy – The Italian national championships of the Barista and Brewers Cup at Sigep scheduled for January 2025 are imminent. Ditta Artigianale has therefore decided to select the most talented baristas to decide in a competition who can represent the company in the Rimini championship. The event took place on the fourth of July in Florence, the pulsating center of the Renaissance movement of art and coffee.

Special guests of the competition were the Hartmann family, owners of the Hartmann Finca in Panama, committed to growing coffee while respecting sustainability and workers.

The winners of Ditta Artigianale internal competitions, Yana Zhyryada and Cesare Spinella,  will not only represent the company at the next national championships but will also have the opportunity to collaborate with Finca Hartmann.

The Hartmann family is considered one of the pioneers of specialty coffee in Panama. They are located in Santa Clara a corregimiento (subdistrict) in Renacimiento District, Chiriquí Province, Panama. The Hartmann family currently has three farms. The first one was founded in 1925 and it is currently the biggest. The farm is a family business.

We interviewed Ratibor Hartmann and his son Ratibor Krzysztof Hartmann to learn more about their project.

What does specialty coffee mean to you?

“First of all, specialty coffee cannot be produced without special people working behind it.  For us, the most important thing that sets our coffee apart from others is the love for nature. Our grandfather taught us to be passionate about the environment and sustainability and we learned how to preserve natural settings with love.

For example, on our biggest farm, we have more than 200 hectares, and half of that contains a forest, a private reservoir that preserves wild nature.

The social aspect is also important for us. Creating relationships and bounds with producers and customers is crucial: this is one of the reasons we are here in Florence, creating and improving our bond with Francesco Sanapo and Ditta Artigianale”.

How important is formation for coffee farmers?

“Formation is truly important. If there are people who don’t know what they are doing on the farm we cannot possibly produce specialty coffee.

We have to teach our farmers how to pick the coffee, and how to cut the grass properly. We do not use any chemicals in order not to interfere with nature. Furthermore, our coffee picking is made completely manually. Formation and knowledge are crucial in this field of work. We teach them how to create specialty coffee with love and passion”.

What is the role of competitions in spreading specialty coffee culture?

“Coffee competitions are important to increase knowledge of what makes a good product but there is more than that: it’s crucial to understand that an excellent barista can truly make the difference between a good and a bad cup of coffee.

If you do not work well as a barista, everything good that has been done on the farms to make a good specialty coffee goes to waste. The Barista competitors are doing better these years.

The mindset of the coffee market is changing in a good sense: we now understand more the difference between coffee infuses and natural quality coffee. In competitions is also important to build the relations between roasters and consumers”.

What was the evolution of specialty coffee consumption in Panama?

“The consumption of specialty coffee in Panama and Europe is very similar and it has followed a close growth in popularity. Five years ago no one knew what specialty coffee meant. Now people are more eager to try new things and consume them. The same concept applies in Europe. The specialty coffee market is growing at a fast rate. We are actually planning to attend more events in Europe. Also, we want to expand our presence in Asia. A large part of people who consume our coffee are in fact from Asia”.
