Palembang, the second-largest city in Sumatra Island, will host a Coffee Festival. The South Sumatra administration plans to organize the event in September 2015 as part of its effort to promote coffee as one of its mainstay commodities.

South Sumatra Tourism and Culture Agency’s acting head Irene Camlyn Sinaga said the province was one of the country’s coffee producers, and the local government sought to promote its signature coffee to both domestic and overseas consumers.

“The promotion is still lacking, whereas the coffee quality is good,” she said on Monday, April 27, 2015.

South Sumatra is known to be home to a host of quality coffee, among them the Semendo coffee that boasts an unmistakably seducing aroma. “The government will further promote the existence of the province’s varied coffee,” she said.

She added the festival would also function as tourism promotions to lure more tourists, both foreign and domestic. She explained increased popularity of local coffee would spell higher income for farmers, thus motivating them to boost their coffee quality.

“This will also stimulate the growth of small and medium-sized industries, particularly in the sector of coffee powder packaging,” she said.
