LIMA, Peru – Peru appears among the world’s ten leading specialty coffee producing and exporting countries along with Mexico and Brazil among others, Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Juan Manuel Benites affirmed on Monday.

The 2016-2018 Coffee Sector mid-term Development Strategy was approved by the Ministry, it was announced.

In this sense, Benites indicated the measure aims to consolidate the country as the world’s second largest organic coffee exporter and one of the top-ten special variety producers.

Relevance

Coffee is one of Peru’s significant source of employment and income, he underlined.

Its consumption is expected to increase by over 10% in the South American nation.

As is known, Peruvian coffee is the main alternative product to displace illegal crops, such as those of coca leaves.

Presence

Junin, Pasco, Cajamarca, Amazonas, San Martin, Puno and Cusco stood out as the country’s leading organic-coffee-producing regions.

On the other hand, the European Union is considered main destination for national coffee exports, followed by the U.S.

Ficafe fair

The “1st International Specialty Coffees Fair (Ficafe)” will take place in rainforest city of Satipo on June 16th-19th, 2016.

This event aims to promote consumption of its varieties, as well as relations with potential national and foreign markets.

It must be noted coffee strongly contributes to national economy by serving as source of foreign currency.
