LIMA, Peru – Peru’s coffee exports are expected to reach more than 700 million the end of this year, says Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Juan Manuel Benites.
Coffee is a “flagship product” and top foodstuff exported by the country and it enables more than 223,000 families in 17 regions and 68 provinces to generate income, he adds.
Junin, San Martin, Cajamarca, Cusco and Amazonas are Peru’s largest producing regions, accounting for 86.68 per cent of the country’s total coffee area.
Greatest productions in terms of quality and volume are registered around the central Peruvian jungle cities of Chanchamayo, Satipo (Junin) and Oxapampa (Pasco).
Besides, bean-related transactions generate more than 54 million direct daily wages and five million indirect ones.
Peru is one of the world’s top ten specialty coffee exporters.
Along with cocoa, coffee has become an alternative product to replace illegal coca crops in the northeastern part of the country.
