BONNER, Mont., US – Planetary Design, LLC, maker of the innovative Airscape coffee storage canister, has launched an effort to increase sustainability between coffee retailers and consumers’ kitchens. All 4- and 7-inch Airscape stainless steel and Airscape Ceramic storage canisters now come wrapped in a reusable cotton bag that can be filled with coffee beans from coffee roasters or bulk dispensers at grocery stores and food cooperatives.

The reusable cotton bag replaces both the single-use plastic bag Airscapes previously came wrapped in as well as the paper coffee bags available at coffee retailers. The reusable cotton bags are also available for purchase at https://planetarydesign.com/.

“We’re excited to make this change to reusable cotton bags in our packaging – it allows us to reduce waste by eliminating the need for both single-use plastic bags on our end and paper coffee bags on the retailer and consumer end,” said Jess Nepstad, CEO of Planetary Design. “The plastic bags we used for packaging no longer go straight into the trash when consumers unpack their Airscapes, and consumers buying their favorite coffee beans through a roaster’s refill program or from a bulk dispenser at a grocery store or food co-op have a convenient and less wasteful way to bring them home. Sustainability through food preservation has always been part of the thought behind the Airscape itself. This takes it a step further.”

After purchasing a stainless steel Airscape or an Airscape Ceramic, consumers will be able to take the reusable bag to coffee roasters, grocery stores or food co-ops, fill it with their favorite beans, then return home and transfer the beans to the storage canister. Bags packaged with 4-inch Airscapes hold approximately 1/2 pound of coffee beans, while bags with 7-inch Airscapes hold approximately 1 pound.

For coffee roasters and retailers, the Airscape canisters and reusable cotton bags also offer a co-branding opportunity. Planetary Design can brand both the canisters and the cotton bags with the logo of a coffee roaster or retailer, and they can then be sold directly to consumers for use in a formal refill program.

“Our fresh-roasted coffee refill program has exceeded expectations since we started it last year. From the idea conception, we researched the best container on the market and found the Airscape canister had the highest quality available. We started the program with just the Airscapes, but with the addition of the reusable cotton bags customers are now able to leave the canister on their counter at home and bring in the bag when they need a refill of our freshly roasted beans,” said Chris Berger, owner of Sugar Creek Coffee Roasters in Indian Trail, North Carolina. “The cotton bags and canisters remove the waste of a 12-ounce bag of coffee and customers get a full pound for the same price, while I save on the repeated costs associated with the paper bags, printing and labels. And having our logo etched on each elegant Airscape canister is great for continued marketing and branding. We’re looking at scaling this successful model and using it alongside bulk dispensers in new and existing retail outlets in the near future.”

In addition to being used for packaging with Airscape stainless steel and Airscape Ceramic storage canisters, reusable cotton bags are available for purchase on Planetary Design’s website, priced at $1.75 per 1/2-pound bag and $2 per 1-pound bag.
