BOGOTA, Colombia – As a result of its contributions to the global coffee industry, the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC) was invited to visit the Global Seed Vault.

Located in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, 980 km from the North Pole, the vault seeks to guarantee the conservation and availability of a wide variety of crops as a way to contribute to global food security in the future.

Hernando Duque, Technical Manager of the FNC, and Juan Esteban Orduz, Subsidiary of the FNC in the United States, visited the vault in representation of the FNC.

The Global Seed Vault initiative attempts to conserve the seeds from the world’s different varieties as a shielding mechanism against their potential loss if a world catastrophe were to occur.

Seeking to preserve the world’s coffee collections and guarantee the viability of coffee production in the future, the FNC was invited to participate in the initiative by providing Arabica coffee from the International Coffee Collections held in Cenicafé.

The drafting process of a document that sets the cooperation conditions between the FNC and Crop Trust -the trust responsible for the management of the vault- has now initiated.
