PORTLAND, Ore. — Coda Coffee Company and Pilot Coffee Roasters have taken the top honors in Roast magazine’s 10th annual Roaster of the Year competition.

The two coffee roasting companies are featured in the trade publication’s November/December 2013 issue, available online at http://roastmagazine.com/about/contests/roasteroftheyear/2014.

Roast magazine’s Roaster of the Year award recognizes companies that roast coffees of superior quality, exemplify a dedication to sustainable practices and employee education, and demonstrate a commitment to the coffee industry, among other criteria.

Two award categories are presented each year. Coda Coffee Company of Denver claimed the top spot in the large (macro) roaster category, which includes companies roasting more than 100,000 pounds of coffee each year. Coda gained the title because of its commitment to a healthy community and environment, with a particularly innovative composting program. Pilot Coffee Roasters of Toronto won in the small (micro) roaster category, for companies roasting less than 100,000 pounds of coffee each year. Pilot’s exemplary marketing practices and dedication to offering quality coffee—evidenced by its education practices and construction of a state-of-the-art coffee-tasting lab—propelled the company to a win.
