SAO PAULO, Brazil – Prices for Arabica and Robusta coffee in the Brazilian domestic market soared in April, says CEPEA in its latest report. As for Arabica, values were influenced by the exchange rate, concerns about global stocks and by significant price rises of Robusta coffee.
Quotations of this variety, in turn, have been in an upward trend since the last quarter of 2023, boosted by the high international demand – important producing countries of Robusta coffee in Asia have been facing both weather and logistical problems.
In April, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for the type 6 Arabica coffee soared 218.17 Reais per 60-kilo bag, or 21.2%, closing at BRL 1,247.84 per 60-kilo bag on April 30.
Considering the monthly average, of BRL 1,214.35/bag, the increase is 200.43 Reais/bag, or 19.8%. The average in April is the highest since September 2022, in real terms (values were deflated by the IGP-DI March 2024).
As for Robusta, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index was at BRL 1,134.67 per 60-kilo bag on April 30, for an increase of 182.25 Reais per bag (or 19.1%) in the accumulated of April
The monthly average, of BRL 1,093.15/bag, surpassed in 200.42 Reais/bag (or 22.4%) that in March, and it is a record for Cepea series, which has started in 2001.
Thus, producers have been closing a higher number of trades, both in the spot market and for future delivery – in this case, involving the product from the 2024/25 season and some volumes of the 2025/26.
Weather and harvest
In April, some coffee producing regions, such as the South of Minas Gerais, registered a small volume of rains, which led some coffee beans to fall from the trees. In spite of that, the weather, in general, has been favoring the final period of ripening at this moment of the harvest beginning.
Concerning the 2024/25 season, some regions, such as the South of Minas, have already started to harvest arabica, with only a few volumes for the time being.
