SIDNEY – Now a man in Sydney claims this tea, made using a traditional Australian plant, contains natural ingredients which can help battle conditions such as Alzheimer’s and cancer.

Jesse Gurugirr, who uses leaves from the Guradji plant to make his brew, says it has special antioxidants which have been proven to help patients suffering from coronary artery disease.

Tea maker Jesse told the Huffington post: “As a tisane, Guradji is packed full of polyphenol antioxidants which are known to be beneficial in preventing cardiovascular disease, cancers and osteoporosis, and play an important role in the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases and diabetes.

“Guradji also contains compounds such as Quercetin and Kaempferol which have effective anti-inflammatory properties.”

Jesse Gurugirr, told how he created his product after learning about the “health benefits and traditional use of Guradji over 20 years ago”.

The leaves from the plant have been used holistically for thousands of years by indigenous people in Australia – to treat everything from toothache to anxiety.

Known as the Guradji men, they would either rub the leaves directly on to gums for toothache or infuse them for internal issues.

The so-called ‘sun tea’ was made by placing the leaves in water out in the sunlight for up to five hours at a time.

They would then drink the infusion, to relieve stress and even to cure cramps.

Described as having a similar taste to green tea, the product can be bought online through his company Lore Australia.

But the tea, which is caffeine free and rich in bio compounds, starts from $24.95 for 40g – around £14 – and is a pricey cuppa.

Writing on his website, he tells how the tea is sun-dried as it would have been traditionally, and contains compounds such as flavonoids and essential metabolites such as inositol.

Flavonoids are known for their anti-inflammatory health benefits while inositol is claimed to promote hair growth and prevent fat from building up near the liver and heart.

But aside from internal health benefits, he even claims the tea leaves themselves when applied topically can boost skin elasticity.

So pop a few leaves in the bath to improve the condition of your skin.

It can also be used in salads or cooking.

The new super tea comes after scientists in the US have discovered that cannabis could help destroy a toxic protein that causes Alzheimer’s.

Compounds in the plant helped to reduce inflammation in cells, allowing them to survive.
