AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands – The UTZ Certified cocoa program is celebrating its five year anniversary. Since the program started in 2009, almost 340,000 farmers have joined the UTZ program, and are working according to the strict requirements as set in the UTZ Code of Conduct for the production of sustainable cocoa.
This means farmers are able to improve their livelihoods whilst taking care of the environment. Together these farmers have sold enough sustainable cocoa to make 20 billion milk chocolate bars of 100 grams, available in 111 countries.
Five years ago the first bag of UTZ certified cocoa was presented to Bert Koenders, at the time the Minister for Development Cooperation. Today, the current Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation received the 13 millionth bag of UTZ certified cocoa from Han de Groot, executive director of UTZ Certified.
“During the holidays in December it is traditional to enjoy chocolate – therefore it’s a good moment to think about the current situation of the cocoa sector. The UTZ cocoa program has seen great successes in the last five years.
They have realized a higher production volume, lower costs and increased income for farmers. By working together with large companies, UTZ can have a positive impact on many cocoa farmers. That makes the chocolate taste even better,” said minister Ploumen.
Impact studies show positive results
Different studies looking at the impact of UTZ Certified show that the program contributes to a better future for farmers, their families and our planet.
Farmers indicate that through trainings they are able to implement better framing practices leading to higher production.
The increase in income has led to a larger number of children being able to attend school. Studies have also shown many more positive examples that confirm that sustainable production contributes to improving livelihoods.
Sustainability should become the norm
Consumers are also more aware of the challenges we face in the cocoa sector and are demanding products that have been produced in a responsible way. By working together with both smaller and larger companies UTZ wants to make sustainable farming the norm. Currently there are 111 countries where you can buy UTZ labeled products.
