MILAN – On Tuesday, September 29, the U.S. will celebrate National Coffee Day, and SweetLeaf Sweetener will be right there to make the festivities even more flavorful and better for you.

How did coffee become the beverage America wakes up to?

In 1773, when colonists showed their displeasure for paying tax to England by dumping tea into Boston Harbor, they not only started an American revolution, but they also started a beverage revolution, as colonists went from being tea drinkers to being coffee drinkers. It only seems fitting that we should honor the role coffee played in the birth of our country by celebrating National Coffee Day.

For decades, coffee was served either black or with cream and/or sugar. Those were just about the only options. Today, coffee choices are nearly endless and it’s not unusual to hear someone ordering a no-foam, double ristretto, half-soy, nonfat, decaf, organic, chocolate brownie, iced vanilla, double-shot gingerbread cappuccino. Those specialty coffees, while delicious, can also be packed with added sugars and calories.

How can we, as a nation of coffee drinkers, have our wonderful specialty coffees without all the added sugars and calories? It’s easy! Instead of sugar, use SweetLeaf regular or organic powder or flavored SweetLeaf Sweet Drops® liquid stevia sweetener.

Brian Jensen, SweetLeaf’s Brand and Marketing Director, said, “With the enormous popularity of sweetened, flavored coffees, there’s a better-for-you way to enjoy that java by using SweetLeaf Stevia Sweet Drops, which sweetens and flavors with zero sugars, zero calories, zero carbs, and no artificial sweeteners. Choose from Chocolate, Vanilla Crème, English Toffee, Hazelnut, Pumpkins Spice, Stevia Clear, Peppermint or any of 9 other delicious flavors. Just want your coffee with cream and sugar? Use SweetLeaf packets instead of sugar for a zero calorie/carb, zero sugar traditional cup of joe.”

A pumpkin spice coffee drink at a national coffee shop chain has about 380 calories, 52 grams of carbs, and 50 grams of sugar. The recipe below, from the SweetLeaf website, has only 63 calories, 2 grams of carbs, and 0 grams of sugar. Plus, it has the delicious, sugar-free flavor combination of pumpkin spice, cinnamon, and vanilla crème SweetLeaf Sweet Drops.

Sugar-Free Pumpkin Spice Latte

Ingredients:

1 tiny drop, or to taste, SweetLeaf® Liquid Stevia Pumpkin Spice Sweet Drops®
1 tiny drop, or to taste, SweetLeaf® Liquid Stevia Cinnamon Sweet Drops®
1 tiny drop, or to taste, SweetLeaf® Liquid Stevia Vanilla Crème Sweet Drops®
1/3 cup milk
2 to 3 shots, about 4 ounces, of espresso or coffee

Directions:

Prepare espresso/coffee and pour into a coffee cup. Froth milk. Pour frothed milk into the coffee cup over the espresso/coffee (scoop out the froth from the frother onto the top of the drink).
Add all flavors and stir gently to keep froth from disappearing, but at the same time, make sure the froth is stirred to add the Sweet Drops flavors to it.

Note that coffee works great instead of espresso. Naturally, the amounts of espresso/coffee and milk can be altered to taste, and the amount of Sweet Drops adjusted to personal taste too. Add cocoa shavings for an extra kick. For a light flavor, mix SweetLeaf® Liquid Stevia Clear® Sweet Drops® with any flavor. You get the sweetness with a hint of the flavor. SweetLeaf has 16 flavors of Sweet Drops.

Celebrate National Coffee Day by creating your own coffee drinks, sweetened and flavored with SweetLeaf sweeteners.
