DOUGLAS, Mich., U.S. — Uncommon Coffee Roasters of West Michigan has unveiled a new small batch roasted coffee brand that highlights the hard work of the cojedores — the coffee pickers themselves.

Cultivo’s first product is canned craft coffee, whole beans sealed in airtight, sustainable, 100 percent recyclable steel cans.

“It protects the coffee flavor longer,” said Guy Darienzo who, with Stephen Keye, owns Uncommon Coffee Roasters roasting facility in Douglas, Uncommon Grounds cafe in Saugatuck and the Cultivo brand.

Varieties in the 12-ounce cans include People’s Choice, a medium to dark roast blend coffee with fruity and chocolate flavor notes, decaf Honduras, Finca Zalmari, a direct trade coffee from Costa Rica, Organic Nicaraguan and Organic decaf Guatemalan. All are roasted at the facility in Douglas.

Cultivo means crop, cultivation, farming and culture

“At Cultivo, we aim to highlight the ones whose hands tell the story, the cojedores, the coffee pickers,” said Darienzo. “Thanks to their hard work, we can indulge in this wonderful beverage.”

Uncommon Coffee Roasters takes pride in its diverse partnerships and strives to work with companies who share similar values. UCR’s goal is to provide a variety of delicious and unique coffees and coffee products to as many people as they can while creating and maintaining sustainable partnerships with customers, coffee producers and everyone in between.

Cultivo is designed for sale in retail stores and is available immediately at Uncommon Grounds, 127 Hoffman St., Saugatuck, and online at www.cultivo.coffee.

“Raise you mug and thank the coffee farmers,” said Darienzo.

Cultivo’s next project is Organic Cold Brew Coffee, ready to drink in three varieties — straight black, half & half and with chocolate milk.

Cold brew is smooth and tasty, made from beans roasted in small batches in Douglas and steeped for 20 hours. It’s never ultra-pasteurized so optimal flavor and nutrition is ensured. The cold brew is certified organic, made with only U.S. Department of Agriculture certified organic products.
