SACRAMENTO – Boyd Coffee Co., one of the oldest family-owned coffee companies in the world, based in Portland, Ore., will return as the title sponsor of the 2014 California ProStart Culinary Cup, the California Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (CRAEF) ha recently announced .
The 12th annual competition will be held at the Sacramento Convention Center March 16-17.
“We are thrilled to be returning as Culinary Cup sponsor again for the CA ProStart Cup competition,” said Katy Boyd Dutt, Boyd’s director of tactical marketing.
“This competition is a valuable experience for these students to take part in as it builds their skills and character as they prepare to move onto higher education and careers in the restaurant industry.”
The gift from Boyd’s will be used to host the annual culinary competition, which includes high school teams from across the state in a contest of kitchen skills, with the main event involving just 60 minutes to prepare an entire three-course meal using two butane burners.
“CRAEF greatly appreciates Boyd’s continued support of our competition and schools,” says CRAEF Executive Director Alycia Harshfield. “Their support is helping to shape the future of the restaurant industry and create a unique and unparalleled experience for the students.”
The winning team will be sponsored to compete in the 2014 National ProStart Invitational May 3-5 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. First-, second- and third-place teams also will qualify for scholarships to various culinary and hospitality post-secondary programs.

CRAEF has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships and grants since its inception in 1981. CRAEF works to enhance education and training programs within the hospitality industry. ProStart is a two-year program designed to prepare high school juniors and seniors for exciting careers in foodservice.
