MINNEAPOLIS – Caribou Coffee, a brand committed to offering its fans premium food and beverage experiences, is excited to announce that it has taken a step toward addressing animal well-being in its food offering.
The coffeehouse retailer recently began serving its most popular signature breakfast sandwich with cage-free eggs. Caribou’s Chicken Apple Sausage breakfast sandwich, which represents 20 percent of the company’s breakfast sales, is now being served with 100 percent cage-free eggs.
“From our commitment to responsible coffee production practices to our investment in operations that protect our environment, social responsibility is a key tenet of the Caribou Coffee culture.
With that, we believe that we can and should ensure the proper treatment of animals throughout our food offering,” said Alfredo Martel, senior vice president of marketing and product management.
“Making this transition to cage-free eggs is naturally-aligned with our company’s core values of providing quality food at reasonable prices. We also know that it is just one step in our larger efforts for more responsible practices, so we look forward to continuing to explore and pursue important initiatives like this one going forward.”
The company’s recent actions were recognized by The Humane Society of the United States: “We applaud Caribou for its move to use eggs from more humane sources,” said Kristie Middleton, food policy manager for the Humane Society of the United States.
“The company’s leadership in improving the treatment of farm animals within its supply chain is laudable.”
