KANSAS CITY, Mo. — If coffee isn’t your cup of tea, Parisi Café’s newest beverage menu selection may hit the spot. Parisi Café introduces Cascara Tea, a unique and refreshing brew made from the dried cherries of the coffee berry.
Cascara is the common name for a hot or iced tea made from the fruit (or cherries) and skins of the coffee bean plant. Typically after the coffee bean is removed from the center of the coffee cherry, the pulp and skins are discarded or recycled. In some countries, the fruit of the cherry is dried and brewed into a tea known as Cascara.
Though not well known in this country, coffee farmers in Yemen and Ethiopia have been steeping coffee cherry along with ginger and spices for centuries. The name comes from the Spanish cascara, meaning “husk”.
Brewed hot, Cascara evokes flavors of tangerine and red apple, with a dried fruit sweetness and a tart finish reminiscent of pomegranate and hibiscus tea. Iced, Cascara’s flavors of mango, apricots, tart cherry and orange blossom honey are refreshing with a subtly sweet floral finish.
“We’ve been working to perfect this unique drink by using completely organic materials from a single hand-selected source in Bolivia, where Cascara tea is known as Sultana,” said Kate Blackman, barista trainer. “We’re delighted to introduce it to our patrons in the Greater Kansas City area.
And tea aficionados will love that Cascara offers healthful benefits – coffee cherry is reportedly rich in super antioxidants because of its naturally high content of phenolic acids containing anti-free radical properties. Try it hot or cold, brewed with a stick of cinnamon for a delicious twist – winter or summer.”
The Cascara Tea is offered alongside Parisi’s other tea selections and is available in retail tins at both Parisi Café locations: Union Station in Kansas City, Mo., and Park Place in Leawood, Kan.
