MILAN – The battle in Vietnam’s coffee shop market is getting fiercer and fiercer. A recent iPOS.vn report on the food and beverage market says that there were 317,299 coffee shops and tearooms in Vietnam in 2023.
If the number of outlets rose only marginally (+1.26%), revenues recorded a double-figure increase (+11.6%) reaching a total of VNĐ590 trillion (US$24.1 billion).
Highlands Coffee remains number one in the market, with a total of 777 outlets operating across the country, of which more than 170 were opened last year. The chain is also present in the Philippines with around 50 shops operating in the Archipelago.
The company has also made significant investments on the production front by spending VNĐ500 billion in the construction of a roasting plant with an initial capacity of 10,000 tonnes, which is set to increase to 75,000 tonnes over the next year.
Trung Nguyên boasts about 700 locations, of which 108 Trung Nguyên Legend. The well-known company founded in 1996 in Buôn Ma Thuột, Đắk Lắk also has also very ambitious plans abroad and aims to open a thousand Trung Nguyên Legend venues in China and about a hundred stores in the US, according to Vietnamese media reports.
Among the emerging brands, Phúc Long stands out with 157 premises, of which around 40 are kiosks integrated into Winmart+ stores. The brand opened as many as 25 flagship locations in the second half of 2023.
Also growing rapidly is Katinat Saigon Cafe, which remains a fairly small chain, but accelerated its pace last year with several new openings in HCM City and Hà Nội.
Finally, Starbucks, which arrived in Vietnam in 2013. The American chain celebrated the 100th opening milestone in September last year and currently has 108 locations.
