SYDNEY, Australia — For over 25 years, Vittoria Coffee has been collaborating with a single leading international sourcing partner who source the finest quality Maragogype beans, ethically and sustainably. To celebrate Vittoria Coffee’s long-term commitment to the Maragogype bean, Vittoria has launched a limited edition Maragogype roast.

The Maragogype is one of the rarest coffee beans in the world. Often referred to as the “Elephant Bean” for its enormous size, is famously difficult to harvest, requiring rich volcanic soil, a tropical climate and ample shade to prosper. It takes the plant five years to produce the perfect size cherry, and few farmers choose to grow it.

Vittoria Food & Beverage has played a vital role in the sustainability of the Maragogype and continues to be one of the largest purchasers of Maragogype globally. Only a handful of plantations in the world are devoted to it, and Nicaragua is the single largest producer.

Deep inside Nicaragua, approximately 150km from its capital Mangua, sits the quiet town of Jinotega. The luscious subtropical mountains are home to 80% of Nicaragua’s Arabica coffee production and one of the world’s rarest remaining Arabica varieties, Maragogype.

Maragogype crops are limited due to their lower yields compared with other Arabica beans, making it a far rarer bean with high sale prices. Despite the cost, Vittoria Coffee has been purchasing the Maragogype bean for over 25 years and is now one of the largest purchasers in the world.

Vittoria Coffee know that The Maragogype not only provides a higher quality coffee blend, but also supports the farmers and communities that continue to grow this extremely rare varietal. This support provides free education for workers’ children, as well as for the children of neighbouring communities, school stationery, school uniforms and a dedicated health centre for the community.

As Vittoria Coffee has long recognised, the Maragogype has a sweet and delicate fruitiness, notes of spice and chocolate with a warm toasty finish. The limited edition single origin coffee contains 100% Maragogype beans, so that people can experience first hand the exquisite balance, wild fruit, and delicate taste of their varietal in its purest form.
