Weber Workshops announces the HG-2 Mk2, a new patented transmission to hand-grinding

Douglas Weber, the Founder and CEO of Weber Workshops: “The HG-1 was our original flagship product. Still popular with the purists and still performing nearly a decade later, the Mk2 builds on that legacy by incorporating all of our more recent innovations that have pushed the single- dosing coffee grinder market forward”

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nevada –  On June 14th, 2024, Weber Workshops announced the latest in its HG series: the HG-2 Mk2. The HG series has undergone a decade-long succession of improvements since its inception. With the HG-2, Weber brought a new patented transmission to hand-grinding to reduce the turning force required for today’s lighter roasts.

With the Mk2, Weber is bringing to the HG line the latest technologies from their KEY line of grinders: 1) An integrated bean feeder, 2) a magnetic dust and anti-popcorning lid, 3) an updated static-reducing wiper for the Magic Tumbler, and 4) a 30% larger chamber for grinding larger doses for pour-over brews.

The Mk2 will also be compatible with the new Magic Tumbler lid that allows it to convert into a shaker. Several recent independent studies have shown again that the Blind Shaker remains the gold standard in puck prep optimization, and Weber is committed to making the process more widely accessible.

The HG2 Mk2 will also be shipping with the latest version of Weber Workshops’ industry-first Bean Feeder mechanism, a device made specifically for single-dosing coffee into a grinder.

The feeder was based on observing user patterns where they would “babysit” the shot grinding and feed in the beans slowly so as to avoid saturating the burrs at any given point during the grinding. This ensures that the grind profile is identical from the beginning to the end of the dose.

Next is the same anti-popcorning that has been so popular on the KEY Mk2. Magnets allow the lid to pull apart and off for cleaning, or straight up and suspended with magnets for loading beans into the burr chamber. Once loaded, the cover easily drops right back down into place preventing any fragments from bouncing out. The new loading chamber is also around 30% bigger, allowing for the larger dose size of many pour-over coffee methods up to ~40g at a time.

The Mk2, utilizing the low gear transmission, can effortlessly grind through extremely light roasts. Utilizing the same 83mm Mazzer burr set as its predecessors, it remains the largest commercially available conical burr set on the market (even for industrial grinders). Weber conducts their own proprietary pre-seasoning that is locked in with a titanium nitride coating, and each unit is professionally aligned and calibrated at the factory. The Mk2 excels on any coffee style from day 1.

The HG2 Mk2 will also ship with an updated version of its patented Magic Tumbler, a grounds control dosing funnel with integrated WDT tool (a stainless wire that mixes up the freshly ground coffee to homogenize the grounds, a proven method for improving espresso extractions).

The new version takes a cue from the company’s flagship grinder, the EG-1, and incorporates a replaceable paper wiper that makes physical contact with the exit point of the grounds, ensuring minimal grind retention well beneath 1/10g, below what most coffee scales are capable of measuring. Combined with the bean feeder mechanism, the need for RDT (water droplet addition) is virtually eliminated in most situations and environments.
