NEW YORK, U.S. – Zero Carbon Coffee has successfully achieved Climate Neutral Certified status by measuring its 2019 greenhouse gas emissions footprint, purchasing carbon credits to offset that footprint, and implementing plans to reduce emissions this year and beyond. The Company is the first and only coffee roaster to date that has achieved Climate Neutral Certified status.
Taking these direct actions against climate change qualifies Zero Carbon Coffee to display the Climate Neutral Certified label in its branding and marketing for the next year before re-certifying.
Every company displaying the Climate Neutral Certified label has taken the same steps to address climate pollution. The process involves first estimating all the carbon emissions from making and delivering a company’s products or services. Companies must then follow a set of standards for buying verified carbon credits to offset their entire footprint. Carbon credits direct investment into reducing and capturing carbon dioxide and support a range of projects such as forest conservation, renewable energy, and transportation.
“Achievement of Climate Neutral Certification is a natural part of our mission to take responsibility for the health of our planet. Customers now have a transparent and quantifiable means to reduce their carbon footprint through their daily consumption,” Zero Carbon Coffee CEO Reuben Villagomez said. “While coffee providers offer many different product features to customers, none have directly addressed brand climate impact. Whether an individual consumer or large corporation, Climate Neutral Certification provides customers a gold-standard that the products they purchase are aligned with their sustainability commitment.”
Zero Carbon Coffee calculated its 2019 carbon footprint to be 10 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent and has offset 20 metric tonnes of carbon to date. All Climate Neutral Certified companies also commit to a reduction action plan to cut future emissions. In addition to continuing to eliminate carbon footprint through the purchase of carbon offsets, Zero Carbon Coffee will be taking additional carbon reduction steps in the coming year, including converting its roasting collective to energy consumption derived from 100% renewable power, and converting all retail packaging to 100% biodegradable and home compostable materials that have recently entered the market.
“Climate Neutral Certified companies show the world that immediate action on climate change is possible and essential,” says Austin Whitman, CEO of Climate Neutral. “We believe this is the beginning of a powerful movement among consumers and companies. Even at this difficult time, our newly certified brands are leading the way by recognizing that climate change must be solved. They believe that all companies should take immediate voluntary action to zero out their entire carbon footprint and are engaging their consumers around this important issue like never before.”
